  • Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Provides game-winner Sunday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/7/16) Niskanen registered the game-winning goal in Sunday's win over the Flyers.

Niskanen fired a game-high seven shots and broke the tie for good just over five minutes into the third period. The defenseman doesn't light up the lamp himself too often -- the tally was just his third goal of the year -- but he's dished out 20 helpers and sports an impressive plus-16 rating.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Finding power play success

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/29/16) Niskanen has registered three points in his last three games, all power-play assists.

Niskanen has been playing on the Caps' top power-play unit ahead of John Carlson, and has achieved great results. Washington's power play has continued to click with Niskanen playing the point, scoring at a league-best rate of 26.8%. If Niskanen is to remain in his current power-play role, his scoring could really take off during the second half of the season.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Riding three-game point streak

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/4/16) Niskanen has points in his last three games.

Niskanen has seen a further uptick in ice time in the absence of John Carlson (undisclosed) and logged 32:04 in Saturday's loss against the Blue Jackets. With Carlson expected back soon, and Brooks Orpik (lower body) making progress, Niskanen's value may be nearing a short-term high, although his production more than warrants keeping him even after his teammates return from injury. The Minnesotan has two goals and 14 assists with a plus-10 rating in 38 games so far.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Has points in three straight games

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/4/15) Niskanen picked up his third assist in as many games in Thursday's 3-2 win over Montreal.

After a slow start to the season, Niskanen has been catching on in the last few weeks as he has eight assists in his last 10 games. The streak coincides with an increase in ice time following the injury to Brooks Orpik, as head coach Barry Trotz has been leaning on the Minnesotan and defense partner Karl Alzner in recent outings. Given his production, it's possible the two will continue to see significant minutes once Orpik returns. Given his offensive pedigree, it's reasonable to expect Niskanen to best last season's four goal, 31 point campaign, giving him plenty of value in all formats.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Tallies assist Tuesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/21/15) Niskanen assisted on Nicklas Backstrom's second goal of the night during Tuesday's 6-2 win over Calgary.

While a slow start plagued Niskanen's first season in DC, the Minnesotan has been highly productive in the first weeks of his second campaign in DC, with two goals and two assists in five games. With Mike Green now in Detroit, Niskanen is in line to receive more quality minutes in 2015-16 and should get closer to his 40-point season of 2013-14 and he's worth starting in all formats.

WASHINGTON (AP) If the Boston Bruins miss the playoffs, they may dwell on their inability to score against Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby this season.
March 26, 2015: Capitals coach laments 'poor' play in 3-2 OT win over Devils
WASHINGTON (AP) Even if a win is a win is a win, especially for a team chasing a playoff berth, Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz gave a rather blunt and unflattering assessment of his team's performance in this particular victory.
March 26, 2015: Matt Niskanen's OT goal lifts Capitals past Devils 3-2
WASHINGTON (AP) On a quiet night for Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, the Washington Capitals got rare goals from Matt Niskanen, Karl Alzner and Eric Fehr, along with 29 saves from Braden Holtby, to beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in overtime Thursday night.
