  • Stars' Ben Bishop: Is now one of only two Dallas goaltenders

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/27/17) The Stars bought out goaltender Antti Niemi on Tuesday, leaving Bishop as the starter and just one backup behind him.

Having both Kari Lehtonen and Niemi on the roster wouldn't have affected Bishop's starter status. However, having three goaltenders often creates confusion and problems in unexpected ways. Bishop will thus avoid any potential issues that might have arisen, as he's the team's clear No. 1, with Lehtonen occupying a backup role.

Stars' Ben Bishop: Locks in six-year deal with Dallas

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/12/17) Bishop agreed to a six-year, $29.5 million contract with the Stars on Friday, the Dallas Morning News reports.

After spending his first four seasons adjusting to the NHL with the Blues and Senators, Bishop flourished in three and a half campaigns for the Lightning -- including a 131-64-20 record, 2.28 GAA and .921 save percentage -- before winding up in LA at this year's trade deadline as a rental player. A two-time Vezina Trophy finalist, Bishop shouldn't have much trouble unseating Kari Lehtonen as the No. 1 goalie in Dallas given the length and total value of the deal, and rumors are swirling that alternate goalie Antti Niemi will be bought of the final year of his contract valued at $4.5 million. Bishop should be a coveted commodity in fantasy drafts this fall, though he may only flirt with elite status unless GM Jim Nill can find a way to bolster a penalty kill that ranked 27th overall this season.

Stars' Ben Bishop: Dealt to Dallas

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/9/17) Bishop was traded from the Kings to the Stars on Tuesday in exchange for Montreal's fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

As we saw in the dealing of Scott Darling just a week and a half ago, teams in need of goaltenders are becoming more willing to deal assets in exchange for negotiating rights to some of the top pending free agents, and this time it's the Stars' turn to get in on the fun. Bishop is coming off an odd season of sorts, as he posted career worsts in save percentage (.911) and GAA (2.55) with Tampa Bay before being shipped off to Los Angeles near the trade deadline. If the 30-year-old ends up signing with the Stars, it will represent a big upgrade at the goalie position for the team, as Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi both ranked in the bottom quarter of all qualified keepers in save percentage and GAA for the 2016-17 season.

Kings' Ben Bishop: Gives up four in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/7/17) Bishop gave up four goals on 24 shots in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Flames.

Bishop faced four fewer shots than counterpart Jon Gillies, but surrendered three more goals to hand Gillies a victory in his NHL debut. The free-agent-to-be hasn't helped his stock since coming to Los Angeles at the trade deadline, managing just a 2-3-2 record, 2.49 GAA and .900 save percentage.

Kings' Ben Bishop: Will start Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/6/17) Bishop will be in the crease for Thursday's game against Calgary, Elliott Teaford of the Southern California News Group reports.

The backup hasn't played particularly well since coming to the Kings, but he's had flashes of brilliance, including his last time out, in which he stopped 25 of 26 shots against Calgary. With the Flames on the docket again Thursday, Bishop will get a shot at another show-stealing performance.
