USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo has been suspended from the national team for six months, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Wednesday.

According to SI's Grant Wahl, Solo's contract with U.S. Soccer was also terminated. Per Rich Nichols, executive director of the USWNT Players Association, an appeal will be filed claiming a 'violation of Ms. Solo's First Amendment Rights.'

The player was suspended for 'conduct that is counter to the organization's principles,' a statement from U.S. Soccer read.

Solo was suspended for 30 days last year for conduct at the team's training camp. She was also charged with domestic violence after a 2014 incident.

Here's what to know

The suspension is effective immediately and comes due to her comments at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she called Sweden 'cowards' after the U.S. fell to the eventual silver medalists in the quarterfinal round.

"The comments by Hope Solo after the match against Sweden during the 2016 Olympics were unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our national team players," said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. "Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect. We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions.

"Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we've had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. national team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action."

When can she return?

If she is indeed just suspended for six months, she could return to the national team in February and isn't going to miss any major competition. The U.S. doesn't have any important tournaments during the suspension and really no major competition until the 2019 World Cup.

What is she losing and what does the 'termination' mean?

As Screamer points out, Solo was scheduled to make $72,000 this year for being a Tier 1 player on the national team. So based on the timing of the suspension, she could be looking at a loss of $36,000. Her $56,000 salary with the Seattle Reign is paid for by U.S. Soccer, but according to ESPN's Julie Foudy, she has not lost the NWSL portion of her contract. It is still unclear as to whether this means the end for her career with the national team.

What was Solo's reaction to the suspension?

After receiving the suspension, she commented, according to Wahl.

When will Solo be back on the field?

The Reign return to action this Saturday.
