Player Outlook
If Elias Diaz could simply only play when the Rockies were playing at home and facing righties, he would be more rosterable. Diaz hit .293 in those situations last season with seven homers and 34 RBI which was an overwhelming amount of his overall volume last season. He did hit .258 on the road, but struggled to hit lefties in any location while receiving the majority of the time behind the dish for Colorado. Diaz is in the final year of his contract with the Rockies and there are few signs the club is interested in re-signing the veteran backstop whose last above-average offensive season came in 2018. The upside with Diaz would be him catching the perfect storm of contract year breakout combined with late catcher career breakout, but both theories require a bit of Jobu's rum to truly believe in them. The best thing we can say about Diaz is that he starts at catcher and can give you 15-ish homers. Everything else is a dart throw given his numbers over the years.

    The Rockies placed Diaz on the 10-day injured list Friday due to a left calf strain, retroactive to June 11, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.. Diaz was removed in the bottom half of the first inning of Monday's game against the Twins after straining his left calf while running to first base. He was held out for the rest of that series in the hopes he would be available for a weekend set against Pittsburgh, but instead the 33-year-old heads to the IL. Jacob Stallings got the start at catcher the last two games, and he figures to see most of the action behind the plate while Diaz is sidelined, though Hunter Goodman will provide some depth and will start at catcher for Saturday's game, per Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com.

    Rockies manager Bud Black suggested after Monday's 5-0 loss to the Twins that Diaz will likely miss the remaining two games of the series in Minnesota due to a strained left calf, MLB.com reports. "It's right in the belly of the calf, so we'll see," Black said of the injury Diaz suffered in the first inning of Monday's game. "He's been feeling it for a couple weeks. He's been able to manage it and [in Monday's game], I think just on that particular ground ball, out of the box, it got him. We'll see in a couple of days. Keith [Duggar, the team's head athletic trainer] wants to treat it for a day or two and see where we are." Diaz was lifted from the game in the bottom of the first after he strained his calf while running out a groundball in his first at-bat of the night in the top of the frame. Jacob Stallings came on to replace Diaz and will presumably start behind the plate for the final two games in Minnesota, and Stallings could be headed for an extended run as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher if Diaz requires a stint on the injured list. Diaz will presumably be re-examined Thursday when the Rockies return to Colorado before the team makes a decision on his availability heading into this weekend's series versus the Pirates. Diaz has been one of the few bright spots for the Rockies this season, batting .303 with five home runs, 28 RBI and 20 runs in 55 games.
