Wells isn't in the Yankees' lineup Saturday against the White Sox. Wells dropped to 5-for-25 (.200) since the start of May after going 0-for-3 during Friday's series opener. He'll get a breather Saturday and give way to Jose Trevino, who will bat eighth.... See More ... See Less

Yankees' Austin Wells: Heads to bench Wednesday
Wells is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins. With a .954 OPS in 11 games dating back to April 24, Wells is beginning to earn himself a larger portion of the work behind the plate, but he'll still be part of a timeshare with Jose Trevino. The Yankees will turn to Trevino to handle catching duties in Wednesday's contest, but expect Wells to return to the lineup for Thursday's series finale.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Heading to bench Sunday
Wells is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. With lefty Tyler Alexander on the hill for the Rays, the lefty-hitting Wells will exit the lineup for the series finale. Jose Trevino will spell Wells behind the plate.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Gets breather Saturday
Wells isn't in the Yankees' lineup Saturday against the Tigers. After going 0-for-2 with a walk during Friday's series opener, Wells will step out of the lineup Saturday. Jose Trevino will start behind the dish instead, batting eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Cranks first home run
Wells went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Orioles. Wells got the Yankees on the board in the third inning, leading off the frame with a 414-foot blast off Dean Kremer, his first of the season. The 24-year-old Wells has started to turn things around at the plate -- he's now 7-for-16 with three extra-base hits in his last four games after going 0-for-21 in his previous nine contests. Wells is now slashing .196/.338/.294 with seven runs scored and three RBI through 65 plate appearances this season while sharing catching duties with Jose Trevino.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Not in Sunday's lineup
Wells is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Milwaukee. Wells went 2-for-6 with a double, a run and two walks in the first two games of the series and will take a seat for the finale. Jose Trevino will step in behind the plate to catch for righty Marcus Stroman.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Gives way to Trevino behind plate
Wells is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Athletics, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Wells will head to the bench for the fifth time in eight games, with four of those absences coming with the opposition bringing left-handed pitchers to the hill. Though the Yankees seem to be opting for a platoon at catcher between the lefty-hitting Wells and the righty-hitting Jose Trevino, it's possible that Wells moves into a pure backup role or is optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre if he's unable to get going at the plate anytime soon. Wells has mustered a lowly .347 OPS through his first 13 games of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Out of Sunday's lineup
Wells is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. Wells and Jose Trevino have alternated starts behind the plate over the past eight games, and that trend will continue Sunday after Wells went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout Saturday. Wells is hitless in his past 19 at-bats.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Resting Sunday
Wells is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians. Wells is getting a breather after he was behind the plate for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, finishing 0-for-3 with an RBI in the Yankees' 8-2 win. Jose Trevino will draw the start at catcher in the series finale, forming a battery with left-hander Nestor Cortes.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Idle for Game 1
Wells isn't in the Yankees' lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against Cleveland. Wells will begin the first game of Saturday's slate in the dugout, though he will likely get the nod behind the dish in the nightcap. In the meantime, Jose Trevino will start against right-hander Carlos Carrasco, batting eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Gets Wednesday off
Wells is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Wells will be on the bench for the second time in the series with Miami, with both of his absences from the lineup coming against left-handed starting pitchers. Jose Trevino will handle the catching duties for the Yankees on Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Out against left-hander
Wells is not in the lineup for Monday's contest against the Marlins, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. The Marlins are starting left-hander Jesus Luzardo, so the lefty-hitting Wells will yield to Jose Trevino at catcher. Wells has made six starts at catcher thus far (all against righties), while Trevino has been behind the plate five times (twice versus righties).... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Bypassed for Opening Day start
Wells won't be included in the Yankees' Opening Day lineup, with manager Aaron Boone relaying that Jose Trevino will receive the nod behind the plate in Thursday's game against the Astros, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. The lefty-hitting Wells will hit the bench for the season opener, which doesn't come as a major surprise with the righty-hitting Trevino having the platoon advantage in his favor against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez. Though Wells offers a higher-upside bat than Trevino, concerns about the former's defense behind the plate could prompt Boone to take a timeshare approach to the catcher spot when New York faces right-handed pitchers, at least to begin the season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Heads to bench
Wells will sit Saturday against the Royals, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Wells has three homers and eight RBI across his last four games, but his slash line through his first 18 big-league contests still sits at an unimpressive .197/.229/.439. Kyle Higashioka will crouch behind the plate Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Smacks game-winning homer
Wells went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays. Wells played the hero Tuesday night, knocking a two-run homer off Jordan Romano in the top of the ninth of a scoreless game to give the Yankees the lead. It marked the second straight game with a two-run homer for Wells, as he also hit one Monday against Arizona. After hitting .103 over his first eight games, the rookie catcher has generated a .276 average with three homers, five runs and six RBI over his subsequent eight contests.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Belts second big-league homer
Wells went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run in Monday's 6-4 win against Arizona. Wells tied the score in the fourth inning with a two-run shot to center field. He added a single in the eighth frame and subsequently crossed the plate with the go-ahead run. The long ball was his second as a pro, both of which have come over his past four games. He's gone 5-for-15 over that span after batting 5-for-39 to begin his major-league career.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Not in Thursday's lineup
Wells is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Blue Jays. Wells popped his first major-league home run in Wednesday's loss to the Jays but will take a seat Thursday for the second time over the last three contests. Ben Rortvedt is doing the catching for Gerrit Cole.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Taking seat Tuesday
Wells is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Blue Jays. It's a routine day off for Wells, who had caught each of the last two contests. Kyle Higashioka will be behind the plate for Clarke Schmidt.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Not in lineup Friday
Wells is absent from the lineup Friday at Pittsburgh. Ben Rortvedt will take a turn as the Yankees' catcher, with Wells and Kyle Higashioka both riding the pine. Wells, 24, has slashed just .103/.156/.138 with nine strikeouts through his first 33 plate appearances at the major-league level.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Austin Wells: Not in lineup for series finale
Wells is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Brewers. Ben Rortvedt will catch and bat ninth if the weather allows for it in New York. Wells has gone 2-for-21 (.095) in six major-league games since earning a Sept. 1 call-up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.... See More ... See Less

Erik Boland@eboland112D agoNever say never (obviously) but Scott Boras not taking a generational player into FA, just after he turns 26 btw, is unlikely at best. Throw in the strong likelihood of a Mets/Yankees bidding war that could take the contract to uncharted territory? Wouldn’t assume too much here..
