Baez was given a vote of confidence from manager A.J. Hinch earlier this week, and he made good on it with his best game of the season. This was the shortstop's third multi-hit effort this season and the first time he's driven in multiple runs. Baez is still slashing a paltry .185/.216/.254 with one home run, 18 RBI, nine runs scored, six doubles and six stolen bases over 38 contests. He's set to remain the starting shortstop for the foreseeable future, as the Tigers have no obvious candidates to push him for playing time.

While all four hits were singles, it was still a big game for the infielder, who entered Friday hitting .171 on the year. Miller received a hydrodissection procedure for his right ulnar nerve in his elbow earlier in the week, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
The procedure was to help with the inflammation surrounding the nerve in Miller's right elbow. He started the season strong with five scoreless outings, but he has taken the loss in two of his last four appearances, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two across three innings over that span. Miller was placed on the 15-day IL on Monday, and he is eligible to return in late May.

Maeda has been dealing with a viral illness that landed him on the IL on May 11. He began throwing off the mound Wednesday, and he'll make a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Barring any setback, that would put Maeda in line to return for May 24 against the Blue Jays. The 36-year-old right-hander is 1-1 over seven starts this season with a 6.75 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB over 30.2 innings.

Tigers' Javier Baez: Will not be benched

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Monday that he has no plans to bench Baez, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
"He's going to play, a lot," Hinch said. Baez has again been one of the least productive regulars from an offensive standpoint in baseball, slashing just .167/.200/.222 with one home run over 135 plate appearances. He's hit only .223/.265/.346 since signing a six-year, $140 million contract prior to the 2022 campaign. Baez also has graded out poorly defensively in 2024 with minus-4 Outs Above Average, although he was plus-9 in OAA in 2023 and the Tigers still seem happy with his defense. Given that the underwhelming Zach McKinstry would represent their likely alternative at shortstop, the Tigers appear willing to continue riding it out with Baez in hopes that he can rebound to at least a competent level at the plate.
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Makes season debut Wednesday

Brieske was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday and made his 2024 debut for the Tigers in this one. The righty, who made 15 starts for Detroit back in 2022, worked exclusively in relief for Toledo, where he compiled a strong 2.95 ERA and 22:11 K:BB over 21.2 innings. However, as a former starter, Brieske may be able to give the Tigers some length from the bullpen for however long he sticks around.

Mize (1-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six.
Jazz Chisholm led off the game with a base hit before Bryan De La Cruz smacked a two-run homer off Mize. The right-hander would proceed to blank the Marlins over his subsequent five innings, allowing just one additional hit, though the Tigers' offense couldn't provide any support in an eventual 2-0 defeat. It's the fourth quality start of the season for Mize, who's allowed just three runs on seven hits over 12 innings in his last two outings. He sports a 3.50 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and 32:10 K:BB across eight starts (43.2 innings) this year. Mize is currently in line for a road matchup with the Royals in his next outing.
Rogers is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.
Rogers will take a seat for the day game after he caught all 10 innings of Tuesday night's 1-0 loss while going 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Carson Kelly will replace him behind the dish in the series finale.

Greene has started each of the Tigers' last 22 games and appears to be getting a breather as Detroit wraps up its series against the Marlins with a day game. Matt Vierling will pick up a start in left field in place of Greene, who hit .135/.200/.243 with 13 strikeouts over his last nine starts.
Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday despite allowing just three hits over eight scoreless innings. He struck out six.
While Olson was spectacular Tuesday, he was matched on the other side by Ryan Weathers, who also delivered eight scoreless frames in an eventual 1-0 Marlins win in 10 innings. Olson has held opponents to one run or fewer in five of his last six starts, including four straight. His ERA is down to 2.09 on the year with a 0.99 WHIP and 41:15 K:BB across 47.1 innings. Still, Olson's been incredibly unlucky to open his sophomore campaign, as he's yet to earn a win through eight starts. He'll look for more support in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week in Kansas City.
