Think "blackouts" are so 2009, college football fan? BYU wants you to think again, announcing Monday that its Oct 13 home date against No. 14 Oregon State will be a blackout "on the field and in the stands."

In addition to the usual request that fans wear black, the Cougars will wear the following alternate uniforms, courtesy of Nike:

“The uniform was designed to have the same striping and maintain an element of tradition, while also creating a fun atmosphere for the team and the fans,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said in the announcement. “Our plan is to wear the uniforms for this one game.”

And if you're going to do a blackout, that's the way to go about it--the similarity between these uniforms and BYU's normal look (and, yes, that sharp black helmet) keeps them from being quite as silly as a lot of (maybe most) black alternates are. Planning them as a one-off keeps the cheese factor low, too.

Still, it's been done, and there's the possibility that the football gods are getting tired of the uniform pranks. The last time we wrote about alternate black uniforms, Western Michigan was getting ALL-CAPS PUMPED for its game against Toledo ... and then had to announce the same week that quarterback Alex Carder would miss the game with a hand injury. The Broncos lost 37-17.

Coincidence? Of course it is. But if you're BYU, do you really want to chance it?
