USC redshirt sophomore quarterback Jesse Scroggins will transfer this summer, coach Lane Kiffin announced on Monday.

"After meeting with Jesse Scroggins and his father recently, Jesse has decided to transfer from USC," Kiffin said in an official release. "Jesse had a very strong spring semester in the classroom, therefore he is academically eligible to transfer at this time."

Scroggins' good academic standing is particularly noteworthy after Kiffin said the quarterback had "fallen behind" in his studies and had "a lot of work to do" to be academically eligible for the 2012 season.

Even with the academic issue resolved, Scroggins' departure does not come as a surprise. The quarterback position was crowded with Cody Kessler and Max Wittek also competing for the No. 2 spot behind Matt Barkley, and the Trojans were one scholarship over the reduced 75-scholarship limit imposed by NCAA sanctions. With Scroggins' exit, the Trojans' roster is set for 2012.

Scroggins has not yet announced where he will transfer, but many expect the Lakewood, Calif., native to make the move to junior college. After redshirting the 2010 season and suffering a thumb injury in 2011, the highly touted prospect will likely search for an opportunity to get playing time immediately.
