Brian Polian will not return as Nevada's coach following a 5-7 season as the coach and school have mutually agreed to part ways, according to a release from the school.

"I have respected the way Coach Polian emphasized academic and life achievement among his student-athletes, and I wish Brian and Laura Polian and their family great success in the future," Nevada president Marc Johnson said.

Polian spent four years as the Wolf Pack's coach, going 23-27 with two bowl appearances since 2013. Nevada's 45-10 win over UNLV in the season finale was not enough to keep Polian around as the Wolf Pack failed to reach a bowl game this season and finished tied for third in the Mountain West's West division.

"I appreciate the opportunity that I was given by President Johnson and the University of Nevada four years ago," Polian said. "I felt, and continue to feel, that we were building a solid foundation for this program. However, this season was fraught with adversity and in the end, we did not win enough games. Like every coach, I understand that this is a business. I wish we would have produced better results in 2016."

Polian -- groomed into becoming a head coach by his father (NFL's Bill Polian) and stints coaching under Jim Harbaugh, Kevin Sumlin and Charlie Weis -- replaced legendary Nevada coach Chris Ault, who made a bowl appearance in every season from 2005-12.
