Michael Putnam is a little bit of a hometown hero this week at the US Open. He's from right around the corner of the site of this year's tournament. He told Jason Sobel of ESPN recently that he used to be the course record-holder at Chambers Bay.

He was also the very first person who ever played it.

The better part of the interview, however, was with an 80-year-old Ken Still. Still apparently used to coach Putnam when he was little. Sobel asked him if he saw that Putnam qualified the day after the Memorial.

His response? Epic.

"Did I see he qualified?" he repeated with astonishment. "Don't ask me a dumb question. I was on the phone with Columbus every half-hour asking them for updates."

Awesome. Actually, the entire article is really cool.

Putnam will tee it up and go off first again this week on Thursday morning. This time, though, it's for his national championship.
