Fred Couples atop the leaderboard at the Masters has become a trend in and of itself. Couples has shot 68-71-72-66 in his last four first rounds at this tournament, each a top 15 finish.

Couples shot a 71 again on Thursday on a tough Thursday at Augusta and trails leader Bill Haas by three.

It will be interesting to see if Couples can keep his top 15 streak going or even, gasp, get into one of the final few groups on Sunday afternoon.

He's been near the lead early in each of his last few trips to Augusta but faded late. Can he hang in this year? I have my doubts mostly because he's 54 and might have a worse back than Tiger Woods.

But if he does, it would be the story of the golf year.
