Leave it to Phil Mickelson to shoot the most dramatic 2-under 140 over two rounds in the history of the Genesis Open. Lefty’s 67 on Thursday got him in contention. Then his 73 on Saturday almost took him off the cut line. But Mickelson being Mickelson, he saved the round by chipping off the green hitting sideways nearly off the range and more.

Here is a sampling.

Mickelson went out in 39 during Round 2 on Saturday. That included this bogey at the par-3 sixth that could have been a lot worse. Mickelson pulled out a wedge on the green when his tee shot landed below the hole with the famous sand trap between him and the cup. He hit it closer than he should have but failed to make the putt.

Then, on the par-5 11th hole, Mickelson found himself in triple bogey territory before hitting a crazy fade out from next to the driving range back into play. He went on to make bogey there, too.

Two holes that could have completely derailed his week resulted in just two lost shots. His 73 on Saturday felt like it could have been an 83. And now he’ll play the final two rounds trailing the leaders by eight at a tournament he’s won twice.
