The amazing A's are the latest team to have joined the derby for Chase Headley, the fine young Padres third baseman who is coveted by a long list of teams.

The Pirates, Indians, Orioles, Diamondbacks and Dodgers have long been known to have interest in Headley, whose age (28), reasonable salary ($3.4) million and varied sills make him popular. The interest has been even higher than the Padres anticipated.

The A's have become a buyer in consideration of their incredible run into the playoff picture. Thus far they view the price tage on Headley as too high in terms of prospects.

The main reason San Diego is even thinking about trading him is that they have a top third-base prospect Jedd Gyorko.
