On the heels of designating albatross Omar Infante for assignment, the Kansas City Royals could be addressing their infield depth issue by signing recently-designated Jose Reyes. At least that's what a former teammate of Reyes':

Reyes and Cora were teammates on the 2009 Mets, so there's a possibility Cora is getting the information directly from the source.

A Reyes-Royals marriage here would be interesting. First off, it makes sense on the field. The defending World Series champions are tied for first in the AL Central, but they aren't without issues, thanks to a litany of reasons (Infante being terrible, Mike Moustakas being out for the season and Alex Gordon currently being injured to begin with). Whit Merrifield has been a revelation, but he could be used at third base or either corner outfield spot.

That would leave second open for Reyes, who hit .274/.310/.378 with 24 stolen bases last season. Putting him toward the bottom of the order here seems like a very nice fit.

In terms of money, the Rockies will surely on the hook for the remainder of Reyes' salary (what's left of $22 million this season plus $22 million next season), meaning I would expect any acquisition to be a free agent signing here once the Rockies officially release Reyes. Then, the Royals would only need to pay Reyes the league minimum ($507,500), pro-rated for what is left this season, which from right now would come to just a few thousand over $300,000. That's pennies as far as MLB teams are concerned.

Of course, the flip side is the fact that Reyes was charged with physically abusing his wife (injuries to her thigh, wrist and neck) last offseason. Charges were dropped because she wouldn't testify, but the issue was ugly enough that the Rockies simply cut bait and will likely eat the rest of his contract just to wash their hands of him following a lengthy suspension by MLB. Part of the signing process should surely be tackling the PR issue of telling their fans why this is acceptable.

In all, this is certainly a situation to watch. Reyes on the field makes sense for the Royals. My colleague Mike Axisa ranked them as the fifth most likely fit.
