The Indians have designated Shelley Duncan for assignment and recalled pitcher Jeanmar Gomez from Triple-A Columbus, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported Wednesday.

Duncan was coming off an .808 OPS in 2011, his best since a short stint in 2007, but he collapsed in 2012, mustering just a .203/.288/.388 line for the Indians. Particularly, Duncan tanked in the last month, going just 6 for 50 with 14 strikeouts the past 28 days.

Gomez managed just a 5.18 ERA in his 13 starts with the Indians this season. Largely, he struggled to miss bats, striking out just 4.3 per nine innings. Hitters made him pay for the contact, mashing 10 home runs in just 73 innings of work. It's unclear if Gomez will pitch out of the rotation (possibly replacing Corey Kluber) or the bullpen at this point.
