On this date in 1990, Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. played together as teammates for the first time. They were the first father-son combination in history to play for the same team in the same game.
The Griffeys, then with the Mariners, hit back-to-back in the lineup. Senior went 1 for 4 with a walk in his debut with the club, batting second and playing left field. He was 40 at the time and had been released by the Reds a few days early.
Junior, then 20, went 1 for 4 as the team's third place hitter and center fielder. He was in his second big league season and his first as a bona fide superstar. The Griffeys helped the Mariners to a 5-2 win over the Royals at the Kingdome.
Here is the box score for that game 25 years ago. Now here's a 2009 MLB Network video commemorating the Griffeys playing together for the first time:
A few weeks after playing as teammates for the first time, the Griffeys became the first father-son duo to homer in the same game. They went back-to-back against the Angels on September 14.
On October 4, 2001, Tim Raines Sr. and Jr. became the second father-son duo to play for the same team in an MLB game.
