Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is not a good baseball player right now. This isn't really disputable. He's hitting .151/.211/.336 with 53 strikeouts against 12 walks. The Phillies are paying him $25 million for this, too.

That being said, he's still a human being and doesn't deserve this kind of treatment from an idiot fan (philly.com):

Ryan Howard's difficult season took an ugly turn on Saturday afternoon when a fan threw a beer bottle at the Phillies first baseman following the team's 6-3 loss to Milwaukee.

The bottle landed near Howard's feet as he walked back to the dugout.Howard alerted a security guard at Citizens Bank Park, who picked up the green aluminum Bud Light Lime bottle. It was tasteless, Howard said.

"I've done too much in this town to have that kind of stuff," Howard said. "If you want to yell out 'You suck,' that's whatever. But when you start throwing stuff, that's when stuff gets personal."

I'd only take exception to Howard saying he's done too much in this town to have that kind of stuff. No player deserves that. The track record is irrelevant. More from Howard (philly.com):

"If you're in the street and you do that to somebody, you might get hauled off on," Howard said. "But we're supposed to hold ourselves to a different standard and what not. Somebody has to do something. Somebody should get reprimanded for it. Because if I would've done something, if I would've went into the stands and tried to beat this dude up, I would've gotten in trouble by Major League Baseball. He probably would've tried to sue me. But it's OK for him to throw a bottle and then go home and be on his merry way? Nah, that doesn't work."

Absolutely true.

This is unacceptable. Let's all try to be better than this clown, whoever this person is.

The Phillies have said they are "investigating" the incident. Hopefully someone in the area of this awful excuse of a fan can give some information that helps lead to an arrest.

And no, let's not start doing that thing where we try to paint all Phillies fans with the same brush. This was one rogue idiot. It could have happened anywhere.
