Padres' Cole Gillespie: Inks minors pact with San Diego
The Padres signed Gillespie to a minor-league contract Thursday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
The terms of Gillespie's contract aren't yet clear, but the 33-year-old might not have earned an invitation to the Padres' major-league camp for spring training after finishing the past season on the independent circuit with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League. Gillespie, who last appeared in the majors in 2016 with the Marlins for 41 games, has slashed .251/.305/.367 over 482 career plate appearances in the big leagues. Assuming he remains a part of the organization after the spring concludes, Gillespie will likely report to Triple-A El Paso and work as a depth outfielder.

Marlins' Cole Gillespie: Designated for assignment Friday
Gillespie was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Friday, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
Gillespie had been playing in a limited role during his time with the team, and will now likely go back to Triple-A New Orleans. The 32-year-old went 12-for-51 with five RBI for the Marlins, and was only hitting .204 with New Orleans earlier this season before he was called up.

Gillespie went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs in Thursday's 9-1 victory over the Rays.
After having just eight at-bats all season, Gillespie picked up nine in the final two games of the Rays' series. He went 4-for-9 with two walks, two doubles, four RBI and two runs in those couple games. Gillespie, who was called up to fill the roster spot left vacant by the suspended Dee Gordon, may make for a sneaky punt-play when called on to fill in for a starter.

Gillespie had his contract selected from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
With Dee Gordon suspended for performance enhancing drugs, the Marlins opted to fill his roster spot with the veteran outfielder, Gillespie. Although Gillespie is now on the active roster, he won't be in the lineup Friday and he does not appear to be in line for an everyday role during his stint with the Marlins.

The 31-year-old hit .290/.333/.428 in 67 games with the Marlins in 2015 after being called up from the minors due to Giancarlo Stanton's hand injury. Gillespie is 9-for-18 with two RBI at the plate this spring and will look to be a fill-in outfielder for Miami during the 2016 season.
