  • Casey Fien: Cut loose by Phillies

The Phillies have released Fien, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander was recently on the 60-day disabled list with shoulder issues but had been pitching for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on rehab work. Fien combined for 12 major-league innings with the Phillies and Mariners in 2017, absorbing an ugly 12.75 ERA in that time. He'll look to catch on elsewhere.

  • Phillies' Casey Fien: Starts rehab assignment Sunday

The Phillies sent Fien (shoulder) on a rehab assignment to High-A Clearwater on Sunday.

Fien has been sidelined since June 20 with a strain of his right rotator cuff. He's not a lock to rejoin the Phillies' active roster once he completes his rehab.

  • Phillies' Casey Fien: Transferred to 60-day DL

Fien (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Monday, Stephen Gross of The Allentown Morning Call reports.

The Phillies needed to open up a spot on the 40-man roster with Elniery Garcia getting activated from the restricted list. Fien will be eligible to return in late August, but it's not clear that he will be healthy enough to pitch again this season.

  • Phillies' Casey Fien: Lands on DL

Fien was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right rotator cuff strain, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports.

Fien was blown up for five runs in 0.2 innings during his last outing, something an injury could help explain. He'll be eligible to return July 1 if he's ready, though it's still unclear if the 33-year-old will need more than the 10-day minimum stay. Mark Leiter was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding roster move and will start Friday's game against the Diamondbacks.

  • Phillies' Casey Fien: Has contract selected

Fien's contract was purchased from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday.

Since being acquired by the Phillies in May, Fien has compiled a 2.00 ERA and 11:2 K:BB through nine innings with Lehigh Valley. Fien did allow 10 runs in just six innings with the Mariners earlier in the season, so he probably won't see many high-leverage innings out of the gate.

  • Phillies' Casey Fien: Dished to Phillies

Fien was traded to the Phillies on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations.

Fien was designated for assignment twice before being traded by the Mariners. He allowed 10 runs across just six major-league innings this season. The trade allows Fien to join the Phillies without being added to their 40-man roster, so he'll head straight to Triple-A where he'll likely serve as organizational depth.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Outrighted to Triple-A

Fien was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

After being designated for assignment Monday, Fien has cleared waivers and will be sent to the minors to work on his stuff. The 31-year-old allowed 10 runs in just six innings of work before his demotion.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: DFA'd Monday

Fien was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

This is the second time Fien has been DFA'd by the Mariners this season after struggling mightily during both of his major-league stints. The 33-year-old allowed a combined 10 runs through six innings during both stints before the Mariners decided to give his roster spot to veteran reliever Jean Machi. He'll likely clear waivers again and be outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Brought back to big leagues

Fien had his contract purchased from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

The veteran righty was DFA'd earlier in the month after struggling out of the big-league bullpen, but a few stellar performances in the minor leagues has him back in the show. He'll likely work primarily in middle relief to replace Chris Heston and Evan Marshall, who were subsequently sent to Triple-A.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Outrighted to Triple-A

Fien was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

He gave up seven runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.2 innings out of the big-league bullpen before the demotion. Evan Marshall was recalled to take his place as a low-leverage arm.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Falls apart in ninth Sunday

Fien failed to record an out to open the ninth inning in Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Angels, giving up four earned runs on two hits and two walks.

The 33-year-old entered the ninth tasked with preserving a comfortable 9-3 lead, but he promptly yielded a 405-foot home run to Albert Pujols to start the frame. He then sandwiched walks to Cliff Pennington and Ben Revere around a C.J. Cron single, ultimately getting charged with three more runs once Edwin Diaz allowed that trio to score upon entering the game. Fien has endured back-to-back rocky outings against the Angels, as he gave up two earned runs over two innings against them Friday night. He yielded a homer in that appearance as well, leaving him sporting an unsightly 14.73 ERA through Sunday.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Perfect eighth inning Monday

Fien fired a scoreless inning in Monday's 3-0 Opening Day loss to the Astros.

The veteran reliever latched on to a roster spot despite a rough spring, but he impressively turned the page in his first outing of the regular season. Fien got through the eighth with a scant eight pitches, with all but one finding the strike zone. The 33-year-old right-hander projects as a serviceable source of holds in 2017 after hitting double digits in that category in three of his past four seasons.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Making case for bullpen spot

Fien, who fired 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out two in Wednesday's 12-7 Cactus League loss to the Dodgers, is making a strong case for a bullpen spot this spring, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "He knows how to pitch and how to work his stuff," said manager Scott Servais. "There's no doubt he's going to help us and it could be in different roles. It could be later in a game, it could be in the middle."

The 33-year-old right-hander doesn't possess the radar-gun popping velocity of his younger bullpen mates, but has racked up a combined nine strikeouts over 5.2 scoreless innings in five of his six Cactus League appearances. Fien's 4.05 ERA is essentially the byproduct of a three-hit, three-run, two-walk outing against the Angels last Sunday, which he bounced back nicely from in Wednesday's effort. The veteran's chances of securing a bullpen role have gone up significantly with Steve Chisek (hip) not expected to be ready until late April at the earliest and Shae Simmons (forearm) currently without a firm timetable for return to game action. With three straight seasons of double-digit holds in Minnesota from 2013-15 before a rough year with both the Twins and Dodgers last year, Fien could be a valued and productive component of the Seattle bullpen to start the season.

  • Mariners' Casey Fien: Signs with Mariners

Fien signed a contract with the Mariners on Saturday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

The terms of the deal are not yet known, but the Mariners did clear a 40-man roster spot for him. The 33-year-old struggled to a 5.49 ERA in 39.1 total innings last season between the Twins and Dodgers, allowing a horrific 3.0 home runs per nine innings. He will likely factor in low on the Seattle bullpen depth chart.

  • Dodgers' Casey Fien: Clears waivers and is assigned to Triple-A

Fien has cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, Eric Stephen of True Blue LA reports.

Fien somehow managed to allow 13 home runs in 39.1 innings, leading to a 5.49 ERA. Don't expect him back in the big leagues this year.

  • Dodgers' Casey Fien: Designated for assignment

Fien was designated for assignment Saturday.

With the Dodgers activating Andre Ethier from the 60-day DL on Saturday, they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, and Fien was the casualty. Fien's numbers would look alright this year if he hadn't given up 13 home runs in 39.1 innings.
