Gillaspie was designated for assignment following Wednesday's loss to the Athletics, Andrew Baggarly of The Mercury News reports.
The move was inevitable for the Giants' 2016 postseason hero after he struggled mightily in a limited role this year (.163/.218/.288 in 87 plate appearances). Gillaspie figures to reject a move to the minors in hopes of latching on as a bench bat with a contender. Ryder Jones was called up to take his spot on the roster and in the lineup.

Gillaspie went 1-for-2 with a pinch-hit home run in a loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.
The 30-year-old didn't start with the left-handed Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound, but he left his mark once the Dodgers turned to their bullpen. Gillaspie has been splitting time at the hot corner with Jae-Gyun Hwang following the trade of Eduardo Nunez, but his .171/.229/.303 line leaves much to be desired even if he is on the favorable side of a platoon.

With the Giants dealing Eduardo Nunez to Boston on Tuesday, it appears that Gillaspie will take over starting duties at the hot corner against righties, with some combination of Kelby Tomlinson and Miguel Gomez seeing action against southpaws. The veteran is slashing a meager .174/.237/.275 in 76 plate appearances as a reserve, so only fantasy owners in very deep formats need to concern themselves with this move. With the Giants playing well out of contention this season, they may look at younger options down the stretch over the 30-year-old Gillaspie.

Gillaspie (back) was activated from the disabled list Friday.
With a .137/.224/.176 line thus far in 2017, Gillaspie's playing time would likely be in jeopardy if not for his fellow third baseman Ryder Jones heading to the disabled list with a wrist injury. Jones only suffered a contusion and was hitting a cool .299/.390/.553 for Triple-A Sacramento before his call-up, so Gillaspie's time with the Giants may be limited.

The 29-year-old was forced to the disabled list due to a lingering back injury for the second time this season. Gillaspie is slashing a paltry .137/.224/.176 through 28 games this season, so the floundering Giants are likely to stick with Jae-Gyun Hwang and Ryder Jones (hand) at the hot corner until Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) returns from the disabled list post All-Star break.

Gillaspie (back) was officially placed on the disabled list Wednesday.
Throughout the course of the 2017 season, Gillaspie has struggled with back issues that have warranted another stay on the 10-day disabled list. Gillaspie missed 40 games before returning June 23, but hasn't been able to shake off the injury since coming back to the team. He could be ready to return before the All-Star break after he's eligible to come off the disabled list, but the Giants won't rush him back following the result of his past trip to the DL. In his place, the team selected the contract of Jae-Gyun Hwang, who is starting at third base while batting fifth for San Francisco on Wednesday.

Gillaspie (back) is batting second and playing third base in Friday's lineup against the Mets, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Gillaspie is back in the lineup for the first time since May 10. The club has yet to make a corresponding move for his activation. The Giants will be hoping he can improve upon the .133/.216/.156 batting line he posted before the injury and can produce more like the .262/.307/.440 hitter he was over 101 games last season.

It seems like one thing after the other is getting in the way of Gillaspie's recovery, although it seems like his back is still in working order during all of this. This doesn't seem like a major issue, so expect him to resume his rehab assignment in the next few days before returning to the Giants within the next week or so. Once he returns, he may be limited to a reserve role now that Eduardo Nunez is back at the hot corner.

Gillaspie had been nearing a return from the DL after playing five games with Triple-A Sacramento, but incurred a setback which held him back for 10 days. He'll likely play a few more games in the minors before the Giants move him back to the big leagues, where he hasn't played since May 10 due to back spasms. Regardless, he could be pressed for playing time upon his return due to the hot bat of Eduardo Nunez and the recent emergence of Christian Arroyo at third base.
