Rangers' Jeanmar Gomez: Battered by Astros
Gomez allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two in two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 7-2 loss to Houston.
Gomez had been a reasonably serviceable arm out of the Rangers' bullpen until he had to face the hottest hitting team in baseball. The Astros pummeled starter Drew Smyly, who lasted just 3.2 innings, setting the stage for a line of Texas relievers. Gomez squelched a threat in the fourth inning but was tattooed for three consecutive doubles and a single in the fifth inning before getting pulled. The 31-year-old will continue in a middle-relief role for now.

Rangers' Jeanmar Gomez: Added to roster
The Rangers selected Gomez's contract Thursday and will include him on the Opening Day roster.

Gomez has been dealing with a sore shoulder for the past 10 days. After flaming out with the Phillies last season to the tune of a 7.25 ERA in 22.1 innings, he has a shot to make Chicago's bullpen this year, though he'll need to prove he's healthy for that to happen. He's pitched well so far this spring, allowing no runs in 7.2 innings.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Sunday that Gomez has been temporarily shut down with a sore shoulder, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "A little sore. Nothing of concern," Renteria said, regarding Gomez's status.
Gomez is expected to play catch Monday and could be cleared to return to spring action later in the week if he endures no setbacks in his recovery. The veteran opened last season as the Phillies' closer before quickly surrendering that role, then was released by the team after failing to find his footing in middle relief. After inking a minor-league deal with the White Sox in January, Gomez has put himself in the mix for a bullpen gig by rattling off five scoreless appearances to kick off the spring.

Gomez signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Wednesday which includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
Gomez broke camp as the Phillies' closer to start the 2017 campaign, but it all went downhill from there. He quickly lost his ninth-inning job after allowing five runs in his first three appearances (15.00 ERA). Gomez continued to struggle in low-leverage work until he was ultimately released in mid-June. The soon-to-be 30-year-old then spent time in the minors with Milwaukee and Seattle, but never worked his way back to the majors. He'll push for a spot in the White Sox's bullpen, though it's difficult to see him returning to high-leverage work even if a strong spring earns him a spot on the team's Opening Day roster.

Gomez signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners and was added to Triple-A Tacoma's roster, Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto reports.
He had a 2.16 ERA in 8.1 innings at Triple-A in the Brewers' organization, but recently elected to become a free agent and joined up with Seattle. Gomez worked as the Phillies' closer last year, but that was a unique set of circumstances. It's possible he could regain a big-league bullpen spot, but it would likely be in a low-leverage capacity.

Gomez signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Saturday.
Three weeks after his release from the Phillies, Gomez has found a new home in the Brewers' organization. He will presumably report to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Gomez enjoyed a fine first five months of 2016 while serving as the Phillies' closer, but he imploded in September and those struggles carried over to this season (7.25 ERA, 1.70 WHIP in 22.1 innings).

Gomez opened the season as the Phillies' closer, but lost the job quickly and wound up working mostly in low-leverage situations. He is 3-2 with a 7.25 ERA and a 21:7 K:BB in 22.1 innings this season. He should be able to find an opportunity with another club in need of relief depth.

Phillies' Jeanmar Gomez: Notches second save Saturday
Gomez retired the only batter he faced to earn his second save Saturday against the Giants.
The Phillies entered the ninth inning with a four-run lead, but after Hector Neris allowed a pair of runs and left runners on base as well, Gomez needed to come in to preserve the victory. With a 7.47 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP, Gomez will need to improve quite a bit before being considered to return to the closer role he once held.
