  • Mets' Blake Beavan: Signs minor-league deal

The Mets signed Beavan to a minor-league deal Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. New York is looking anywhere it can for pitching depth considering the health of Noah Syndergaard (lat). Beavan had worked a 3.79 ERA in the Mexican League and last occupied a major-league roster spot in 2014 with the Mariners. His biggest volume of work came in 2012, when he posted a 4.43 ERA, 3.96 K/9 and 1.42 BB/9 in 26 starts for Seattle. The 28-year-old right-hander will wait for a call to the bigs while at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Beavan, who has been out with the shoulder issue since mid-April, made his rehab debut at Class A Lake Elsinore last week. He will continue his assignment at Tacoma, and will likely make his first start this weekend. Given the extensive layoff, Beavan will likely need the full 30 days allowed for his rehab assignment before he can be activated.

  • Blake Beavan exits first start with shoulder tightness

Mariners starting pitcher Blake Beavan made it through just four innings of work in his season debut against the Rangers Tuesday, due to shoulder tightness. Making his first start after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, Beavan told the Seattle Times after the game he was never able to get loose throughout the start. He struggled to get his velocity up and had to battle through the tightness, before throwing in the towel after 63 pitches. Beavan was charged with two runs on six hits in his four innings of work, while striking out one batter. He threw 38 of 63 pitches for strikes. Manager Lloyd McClendon told reporters before the game he was leaning toward having Beavan make another start this weekend, but an issue with his shoulder would certainly throw that into doubt. • Mariners weighing decision on fifth starter

The Mariners must add another starting pitcher next week to replace the injured James Paxton in the starting rotation. Taijuan Walker and Blake Beavan are the leading candidates. Walker will probably get the call if he is ready in his recovery from shoulder soreness. He certainly appeared to be in fanning 10 in five shutout innings during a rehab start for Double-A Jackson. But if the Mariners want to increase his pitch count before sticking him in their rotation, Beavan could be promoted. Beavan was far less impressive in his last start for Triple-A Tacoma. He surrendered three runs and two homers in six innings for a no-decision.
