Wilhelmsen signed with the St. Paul Saints of the independent American Association, The Marshall News Messenger reports.
Wilhelmsen was cut loose by the Padres near the end of spring training. He'll now look to build up his resume in an independent league, likely in an attempt to eventually return to affiliated baseball.

Padres' Tom Wilhelmsen: Inks minor-league deal with Padres
Wilhelmson signed a minor-league contract with the Padres which includes an invitation to spring training, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Wilhelmson broke camp with the Diamondbacks last season but was designated for assignment in June after compiling a 4.44 ERA and 17:12 K:BB across 26.1 innings of relief. The 34-year-old joined the Brewers on a minor-league deal shortly thereafter, but was cut loose after struggling to a 13.15 ERA across 13.0 frames with Triple-A Colorado Springs. Even if Wilhelmson earns an Opening Day bullpen spot with the Padres, he won't carry mixed-league relevance.

Tom Wilhelmsen: Released by Brewers
Wilhelmsen was released by the Brewers on Saturday.
The 33-year-old was picked up by Milwaukee after being released by the Diamondbacks earlier this season, but struggled over 16 relief appearances at Triple-A Colorado Springs, racking up a 13.15 ERA and 2.62 WHIP. He will look to latch on with another organization in hopes of continuing his 2017 campaign, though it will surely be on a minor-league basis.

Brewers' Tom Wilhelmsen: Joins Brewers on minor-league deal
Wilhelmsen agreed to a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
Wilhelmsen, who was released by the Diamondbacks on Monday after posting a 4.44 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 17:12 K:BB through 26.1 innings this season, is expected to report to Triple-A Colorado Springs later this week. The 33-year-old could find himself back in the majors relatively soon given Milwaukee's ongoing bullpen struggles; the Brewers rank last in the majors with 19 losses and their 1.46 WHIP is the third-worst mark in the league.

Wilhelmsen covered 2.1 innings to close out Tuesday's 10-2 win over the Padres, yielding one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two.
The fact that manager Torey Lovullo turned to Wilhelmsen to record a season-high seven outs while the team owned a nine-run lead illustrates just how far he's fallen in the bullpen pecking order. The former Mariners closer opened the campaign in a key setup role and has recorded three holds on the season, but none have come since April 22. With a 4.62 ERA and 1.62 WHIP on the season, Wilhelmsen has been one of the worst performers in what's otherwise been a solid bullpen, so it's not expected he'll see much usage in high-leverage situations anytime soon.

Wilhelmsen tossed a scoreless eighth inning in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates, working around one hit and one walk.
Wilhelmsen was able to keep the score knotted at 3-3 in his 24th appearance of the season, but the control problems that have troubled him lately once again surfaced. He's now given up six walks over his last six innings while also tossing four wild pitches over that span. The former Mariners closer seems to have fallen behind Fernando Rodney, Archie Bradley, J.J. Diamondbacks' Tom Wilhelmsen: Gives up game-winning homer Sunday
Wilhelmsen gave up two runs in the 10th inning to take the loss Sunday against the Pirates. He allowed one hit and one walk, needing 21 pitches to record three outs.
Wilhelmsen entered the contest with the game tied 4-4 and retired the first two batters of the inning before walking Gift Ngoepe and then serving up a two-run homer to Jose Osuna. The right-hander was pitching for the third day in a row, so fatigue may have played a factor in his inability to escape the inning unscathed. Look for manager Torey Lovullo to steer away from Wilhelmsen for the next two days, but the former Mariners closer still looks to be a key part of the Diamondbacks' setup ranks.

Wilhelmsen recorded two outs via strikeout and walked a batter in Sunday's 13-inning win over the Rockies.
Wilhelmsen seems to have turned a corner since allowing three runs in an appearance April 12 against the Giants. In his subsequent seven outings, he's covered 6.1 innings, giving up just one run while scattering six hits and one walk. Fernando Rodney's hold on the closing job has seemingly loosened over the past week, and while Wilhelmsen would likely rank as one of the top replacement options due to his prior experience saving games, he still may find himself behind the high-performing J.J. Hoover in the pecking order.

Wilhelmsen was tagged for three runs on two hits and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning Wednesday in Arizona's 6-2 loss to the Giants.
The veteran reliever managed to get the first two outs of the seventh inning relatively quickly, but then a wild pitch, a passed ball, and two extra-base hits ultimately turned what initially seemed to be a sharp outing into a poor one. Prior to this implosion, Wilhelmsen hadn't allowed a run since his appearance on Opening Day, but now his ERA sits at an ugly mark of 9.00
