Will Middlebrooks: Hangs it up
Middlebrooks (lower leg) announced Thursday that he's retiring from baseball, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Middlebrooks suffered a significant leg injury last year during spring training, preventing him from sniffing the field at all in 2018. He saw limited success at the major-league level during his brief career, slashing .228/.272/.391 with 43 homers and 155 RBI in 347 contests.

Middlebrooks (lower leg) was placed on the minor-league disabled list Friday.
Middlebrooks suffered a fractured left fibula this past weekend and will likely remain sidelined for at least a couple months. Due to the injury, any hopes of Middlebrooks seeing action in the majors any time soon were dashed.

Phillies' Will Middlebrooks: X-rays reveal significant injury
Middlebrooks suffered a fractured left fibula during Saturday's spring training game, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.
Middlebrooks suffered the significant injury during an outfield collision with teammate Andrew Pullin. The third baseman may have also injured his left ankle in the process and is currently undergoing further testing to determine to what extent that may be. It's an unfortunate blow for the 29-year-old, who was looking to make the Phillies' big-league roster with a strong spring training.

Phillies' Will Middlebrooks: Injures ankle in collision
Middlebrooks was removed from Saturday's game after colliding with Andrew Pullin in the outfield, Matt Gelb of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.
Left fielder Pullin rolled over Middlebrooks' ankle as the two converged on a blooper which fell between them. The injury appeared serious, and the third baseman left the game with his leg in a cast. It's tough luck for the journeyman infielder, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and was fighting for a bench spot with the Phillies this spring.

Phillies' Will Middlebrooks: Inks NRI deal with Phillies
Middlebrooks signed a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training with Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Middlebrooks appeared in 22 games with the Rangers, hitting just .211/.231/.368 with 14 strikeouts in 38 at-bats. The third baseman spent most of the season at the Triple-A level, and will likely begin 2018 with Lehigh Valley while serving as organizational depth for his new club.

Will Middlebrooks: Headed to free agency
Middlebrooks declined his outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock and is now a free agent.
Middlebrooks passed through waivers untouched and has decided to test the waters of free agency. The 29-year-old hit an unimpressive .211/.231/.368 in 39 plate appearances for the big club this season, but he should be able to find a minor-league deal somewhere given his respectable minor-league numbers over the previous two campaigns.

Rangers' Will Middlebrooks: Records base hit in starting role
Middlebrooks started at third base and went 1-for-4 in Monday's 11-2 loss to the Astros.
The Rangers have leaned on Drew Robinson as their primary third baseman with Adrian Beltre limited to designated-hitting duties while he recovers from a hamstring injury, but Middlebrooks received the starting nod at the hot corner in the series opener. Neither Robinson nor Middlebrooks has made much of an impact offensively in September, but with few attractive healthy alternatives laying in wait, it's expected that the duo will continue to see all of the reps at the position until the regular season concludes Sunday.

Rangers' Will Middlebrooks: Seeing steady usage in September
Middlebrooks struck out in his pinch-hitting appearance during the Rangers' 8-1 loss to the Mariners on Wednesday.
Since being added to the big-league squad as a Sept. 1 callup, Middlebrooks has seen more action than expected, appearing in seven of the Rangers' last 11 games and batting 3-for-16 with three RBI. Injuries to Mike Napoli (leg) and Adrian Beltre (hamstring) have helped Middlebrooks' case for picking up at-bats, but his responsibilities could dwindle once Napoli is cleared to return. Beltre was activated from the 10-day disabled list earlier this week and deployed as a pinch hitter Wednesday, but his injury probably won't allow him to play the field for the rest of the season.

Rangers' Will Middlebrooks: Called up by Rangers
Middlebrooks was called up by the Rangers on Friday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
The Rangers will reward Middlebrooks for his strong season with Triple-A Round Rock, and it's possible he will see some playing time in the immediate future with Adrian Beltre nursing a hamstring strain. Middlebrooks generated a lot of buzz after hitting 15 homers in 75 games with the Red Sox as a 23-year-old in 2012, but ever since his contact woes and lack of patience have been exploited by big-league hurlers.

Rangers' Will Middlebrooks: Activated at Triple-A
Middlebrooks (hand) is back in action for Triple-A Round Rock and has home runs in his first two games since coming off the DL on Thursday.
He also homered in his last game before landing on the DL with a broken left hand on April 17, so he has technically homered in three straight games. His season line is .309/.377/.691 with a 13:5 K:BB in 55 at-bats, but it seems clear that he is a Quadruple-A hitter at this point.

Rangers' Will Middlebrooks: Lands on DL
Middlebrooks was placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Round Rock with a broken left hand, TR Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Middlebrooks was off to a nice start before landing on the DL, going 15-for-48 with four homers and 14 RBI through 12 games. He hit just .111 in 31 plate appearances with the Brewers in 2016, so he'll continue to serve as organizational depth with Round Rock when he returns.
