  • Orioles' Sean Coyle: Inks minor league deal with Orioles

Coyle signed a minor league contract with the Orioles on Tuesday, Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.

The 24-year-old hasn't hit much over the past two seasons (sub-.200 batting average between Triple-A and Double-A) and struck out over 30 percent of the time in 2016, but his true calling card is his defensive utility. Coyle's ability to play second base, third base, and the outfield paired with his ability to take walks could help him stick around in the organization, although his fantasy stock will remain pretty low until he starts making more contact.

  • Angels' Sean Coyle: Designated for assignment

Coyle was designated for assignment Saturday.

The Angels needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Nick Buss on Saturday, so Coyle was the casualty. The 24-year-old is slashing .159/.263/.274 in the minors this year. He'll now be subject to waivers, but he could return to the Angels if he goes unclaimed.

  • Red Sox's Sean Coyle: Homers and scores twice

Coyle homered and scored twice in Double-A Portland's 5-4 win over Harrisburg on Tuesday.

He's still striking out plenty, however, as 16 of his last 33 at-bats have ended by way of the K. The 24-year-old third basemen -- who's batting .151 this season between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket -- will need to boost his average if he has any shot of advancing past the minor league level.

Coyle, drafted by Boston in 2010, is off to a rough start this season with a .194/.256/.389 slash line and just four RBI. The 24-year-old was sent down after a mediocre spring in which he finished with three hits over nine games. Coyle had a tough season in Triple-A last year as well and must improve at the plate to remain on the 40-man roster.
