  • Indians' Preston Claiborne: Out with elbow strain

Claiborne was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow strain Tuesday.

The 30-year-old joined the Indians on a minor-league deal this offseason and opened the season with Triple-A Columbus. He owns a 4.05 ERA in 73.1 innings at the big-league level. The severity of his injury is not yet clear.

  • Indians' Preston Claiborne: Signs NRI deal with Indians

Claiborne agreed to a minor-league contract with the Indians on Friday which includes an invitation to spring training.

Claiborne spent a majority of last season at Triple-A Round Rock within the Rangers' system, posting a 1.89 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 38 innings of relief. The 30-year-old only appeared in one major-league game and hasn't been a reliable arm since the 2014 campaign when he was a member of the Yankees. While Claiborne could see some time in the Indians' bullpen, he shouldn't be on the fantasy radar to begin the season.

  • Rangers' Preston Claiborne: Accepts assignment to Triple-A

Claiborne cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock.

Claiborne appeared in just one game for the Rangers before he was dropped from their 40-man roster to make room for Jason Grilli. He'll stick with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate as organizational bullpen depth.

  • Rangers' Preston Claiborne: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Rangers designated Claiborne for assignment Sunday, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

After getting blown up for three runs over two innings in his lone relief appearance with the Rangers on June 26, Claiborne was shuttled to Triple-A Round Rock soon after. He'll now lose out on a 40-man roster spot, as the Rangers acquired Jason Grilli from the Blue Jays on Sunday to address their lack of quality depth out of the bullpen. Claiborne is expected to stick around at Round Rock in a relief role if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Rangers' Preston Claiborne: Returns to Triple-A

Claiborne was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.

Claiborne saw the mound just once during his recent stint in the majors, surrendering three earned runs on five hits across two innings in Monday's series opener in Cleveland. The 29-year-old has shined at the Triple-A level otherwise, collecting a 1.37 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 26 appearances. Claiborne could be back in the majors down the road, but for the time being he will serve as a roster casualty after the team needed to make room for the activation of Andrew Cashner (oblique).

  • Rangers' Preston Claiborne: Tagged for three runs in team debut

Claiborne gave up three runs on five hits in Monday's 15-9 loss to the Indians.

The bullpen had already imploded prior to Claiborne's entry into the contest in the top of the seventh inning, but the right-hander's performance didn't make the loss any less embarrassing for the Rangers. After earning his way back to the majors after delivering a 1.37 ERA in 26.1 innings at Triple-A Round Rock, Claiborne was immediately roughed up in his first appearance of the season against big-league hitting, conceding four doubles on the evening. It's expected that manager Jeff Banister will limit Claiborne's appearances mainly to mop-up duty moving forward.

  • Rangers' Preston Claiborne: Promoted to major leagues

Claiborne was called up from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.

The right-hander will get his first major-league opportunity in nearly three years, replacing Jeremy Jeffress (back) in the Rangers' bullpen. Claiborne has served as the closer with Round Rock throughout the season, notching 13 saves while pitching to a 1.37 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, but he will likely work mostly in the middle innings with Texas.

  • Rangers' Preston Claiborne: Heads to Texas on minors deal

Claiborne agreed to a minor league contract with the Rangers, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

Claiborne hasn't seen the majors since pitching 71.1 innings with the Yankees over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, putting together a 3.79 ERA in 62 relief appearances over that span. He missed all of 2015 with a shoulder injury, then posted a 2.38 ERA in 21.0 innings during his Double-A rehab stint last season. The 29-year-old will likely serve as organizational depth, but he carries some future intrigue if his shoulder can fully recover.
