  • Cory Rasmus: Released by Rays

Rasmus (groin) was released by the Rays on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The 29-year-old righty has been dealing with a groin injury throughout spring camp and simply didn't have a role in the minors. Rasmus appeared in 19 games for the Angels last season, posting a 5.84 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP over 24.2 innings, but appears to be on the move without making an impact in Tampa Bay. He'll look to latch on with a minor-league contract elsewhere.

  • Rays' Cory Rasmus: Starts season on DL

Rasmus (groin) is on the 7-day disabled list with Double-A Montgomery, Rashad Snell of Alabama News reports.

The right-hander was sidelined for much of spring training due to this groin issue, and it doesn't appear to have improved much since the beginning of March. It's unclear how long he'll remain out, but a firmer timetable should come forth as he progresses in his recovery program.

  • Rays' Cory Rasmus: Slowed by groin injury

Rasmus has been dealing with a pulled groin in recent days, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The injury has prevented Rasmus from appearing in Grapefruit League games since his spring debut back on Feb. 25. The 29-year-old is attending camp as a non-roster invitee, so if he doesn't get over the groin issue quickly, his chances of winning an Opening Day bullpen gig may rapidly diminish.

  • Rays' Cory Rasmus: Will sign with Rays

Rasmus has agreed to a minor league contract with Tampa Bay, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports.

Rasmus will join the same organization as his brother, Colby, after spending the last four seasons with the Angels. The right-hander missed most of last season after undergoing groin surgery and struggled upon his return. He finished 2016 with a 5.84 ERA over 24.2 innings in relief and was designated for assignment in November. Rasmus likely provides organizational depth, but could be an option to fill the bullpen vacancy left by Kevin Jepsen.

  • Cory Rasmus: Opts to become free agent

Rasmus declined an outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake and is now a free agent.

Rasmus' 2016 season was one to forget. Between multiple stints on the disabled list, he managed to throw just 24.2 innings over 19 games. During said games, he allowed 16 runs off 25 hits and 16 walks, giving him a 5.84 ERA and 1.66 WHIP for the year. Due to his struggles, Rasmus will likely take on a low-leverage bullpen role, regardless of where he ends up signing.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Sent off 40-man roster

Rasmus was designated for assignment by the Angels on Tuesday.

The Angels activated five pitchers off the 60-day DL, leaving no room on the 40-man roster for the 29-year-old. Rasmus battled a groin injury during the season, but even when he was healthy, he was only able to muster a 5.84 ERA across 19 appearances, although his major league experience could help him ascend back into the major league bullpen.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Activated off disabled list

Rasmus (groin) was activated off the disabled list Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Persistent groin issues have kept Rasmus on the shelf for the majority of the season, but he'll make his return to the active roster Wednesday after a nearly three month absence. Considering that Tyler Skaggs was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday, Rasmus timely activation will add some depth to the Angels' bullpen. In just 21.2 innings this season, Rasmus has worked a 5.40 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Underwent surgery Wednesday

Rasmus (groin) underwent surgery on his injured groin Wednesday, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

Rasmus was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 13. Unfortunately, it seems he did not progress in a positive direction as the decision has been made to send him for surgery. Rasmus missed roughly four months following surgery last season and it's possible this could knock him out for the remainder of the 2016 campagin. Expect an update when more information is made available.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Placed back on 15-day DL Monday

Rasmus was placed back on the 15-day disabled list Monday, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Rasmus was just activated from DL on Thursday. He pitched 2.1 innings over three games, giving up just one earned run. It is unclear when exactly he aggravated his groin to cause this return the DL. The Angels subsequently recalled Al Alburquerque and A.J. Achter from Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Returns from disabled list Thursday

Rasmus (groin) returned from the disabled list Thursday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Rasmus was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right groin on May 17. The 28-year-old will take the spot of Greg Mahle on the roster, and will try to bring some help to the Angels' bullpen. In 11 appearances this season, Rasmus has posted a 5.59 ERA during 19.1 innings of action. Even though opposing batters are only hitting .204 off of him, his 12:13 K:BB has hurt him significantly.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Lands on 15-day DL

Rasmus is headed for the 15-day DL with a strained right groin, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

The hits just keep coming for the Angels, but Rasmus seems confident his injury isn't too serious. He suggested he could make it back soon after his two weeks are up. The 28-year-old has struggled in 11 appearances this season and is probably out of the mix for starts with Jhoulys Chacin now in Anaheim, and Tim Lincecum likely to follow.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Candidate to start Wednesday

Rasmus is a candidate to start Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports.

Matt Shoemaker is the favorite to start Wednesday, but just the fact that Rasmus is in the discussion suggests he probably has at least a handful of starts in his future this season after the Angels' rotation has been decimated by injuries. He allowed five runs on five hits over 2.1 innings on a spot start that was essentially a bullpen game Friday, but could theoretically go deeper into a start Wednesday now that his pitch count has been built up slightly. That said, there is no reason to expect him to be any more effective.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Allows five runs in first start of 2016

Rasmus (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits over 2.1 innings against the Rays on Friday. He also walked two and struck out none in the loss.

The 28-year-old received the spot start with Garrett Richards landing on the disabled list this week. Rasmus wasn't expected to go deep into the game, but the five hits, including two homers, probably shortened his outing more than the Angels would have liked. Rasmus now has a 6.48 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 10 strikeouts and 10 walks in 16.2 innings over nine appearances this season.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Set to start bullpen game Friday

Rasmus will start Friday's game against the Rays after Garrett Richards (fatigue) was scratched from his scheduled start, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.

With Richards ruled out for the contest, the Angels have opted to have Friday be a bullpen game, allowing Rasmus to make a start. That being said, the right-hander probably won't go too far into the game unless he's really mowing down Tampa Bay's hitters, so it'll be tough for him to garner too much value despite the start.

  • Angels' Cory Rasmus: Not available for Monday's game

Rasmus will not be available for Monday's game after pitching three innings of relief over the past two days, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

Rasmus pitched fairly well over the weekend despite the loss to his record, but he was fairly taxed, leading the Angels to give him a day off. This shouldn't affect his status going forward much, as he'll continue to get regular use once he's fully rested.
