  • Nick Travieso: Heading to independent league

Travieso signed a contract with the Kansas City Monarchs of the independent American Association on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old was drafted in the first round by the Reds in 2012, but the organization released him in 2019. Travieso missed the previous two seasons due to a shoulder injury and never reached the Triple-A level.

  • Nick Travieso: Released by Reds

Travieso, the Reds' first-round pick in 2012, was released by the organization Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Travieso was never able to recover from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He appeared in two games at Rookie-level Billings this season as he tried to restart his career, but it's the end of the line for him with the Reds.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Removed from 40-man roster

Travieso (shoulder) was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.

The 14th overall pick in 2012, he missed the entire 2017 season due to shoulder issues. Surgery was ultimately deemed necessary to repair his labrum, and with a nine-month estimated recovery timetable, it seems likely that Travieso will still be limited at the start of spring training.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Out nine months following surgery

Travieso will be sidelined for nine months following surgery on his shoulder, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Travieso, who has been sidelined all season with a shoulder injury, successfully underwent surgery to repair his labrum. He's now hoping to be ready sometime around the start of the 2018 season.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Undergoes shoulder surgery

Travieso recently underwent right shoulder surgery, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Travieso has been sidelined since before spring training with the shoulder injury that ultimately needed surgery. It's uncertain what procedure he underwent at this point, but it's probably safe to rule him out for the rest of the season.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Begins throwing program

Nick Travieso (biceps inflammation) has begun a throwing program in Arizona, the Cincinnati Enquirer's Zach Buchanan reports.

The injury was previously thought to be a shoulder issue, but Buchanan labeled it as biceps inflammation. He is on the 60-day DL, so rehab will be his primary focus in the first half of the season. Once fully healthy, Travieso would likely head to Double-A or Triple-A.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Still shut down

Travieso (shoulder) is still shut down from all pitching activities, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Travieso received a cortisone injection earlier this month and has been in "an active period of rest," according to Player Development Director Jeff Graupe. Regardless, the 23-year-old prospect likely won't see game action for at least a few weeks as he continues to recover from offseason surgery.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Backs off from throwing

Travieso (shoulder) received a cortisone shot in his bicep Tuesday and will not throw for the next three-to-five days, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The Reds prospect was already behind the rest of the pitchers in camp due to offseason shoulder surgery, and this only delays him further. Travieso had been ramping up the distance of his throws over the past couple weeks, but it seems like this development could keep him out of spring action for another couple weeks at least.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Begins throwing program

Travieso (shoulder) began throwing earlier this week and was up to 75 feet Friday.

Travieso is behind other hurlers after undergoing an offseason procedure to repair an impingement caused by his scapula pushing against his right shoulder. The 23-year-old right-hander said he's been finding his arm slot and is expected to push out to 90 feet Sunday. Travieso, Cincinnati's 20th-ranked prospect according to RotoWire, had a 3.84 ERA in 117.1 innings over 23 starts at Double-A Pensacola last season while coping with a couple injuries. Moving up to Double-A, he found hitters more selective and his walk rate jumped. If Travieso doesn't start the season at Triple-A Louisville, he's expected to reach that level at some point in 2017.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Recovering from shoulder injury

Travieso is recovering from a shoulder injury and will restart his throwing program, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Travieso will begin spring training behind the other pitchers, but it doesn't seem like the injury is anything serious. A first-round pick in 2012, the right-hander posted a 3.84 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 23 starts last season for Double-A Pensacola.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Added to 40-man roster

Travieso was added to the Reds' 40-man roster on Friday.

The Reds opted to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Prior to 2016, Travieso safely profiled as a future No. 4 starter, but after walking 10.4 percent of the batters he faced at Double-A, that outlook seems too optimistic. He lacks a plus secondary pitch, and if his command is fringe average, Travieso starts to project as more of a No. 5 starter or middle reliever.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Back in action at Double-A

Travieso (ankle) has a 3.26 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 10 strikeouts in 19.1 innings through four August starts with Double-A Pensacola.

Missed almost three weeks after suffering an ankle injury in mid-July, but he is back in action with the Blue Wahoos, so at least it appears he'll be able to finish the year in good health. Travieso should only be of interest in dynasty leagues if No. 4 and No. 5 starters are in high demand. He has the body and pitch mix to handle life as a starter, but it's hard to envision him ever offering the strikeouts or ratios to make him useful in standard leagues.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Leaves start after fielding injury

Travieso left Monday's start for Double-A Pensacola after falling awkwardly while covering first base in the fifth inning, RedsMinorLeagues.com reports.

Travieso has been mediocre for Pensacola in 17 starts, posting a 4.16 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 68:38 K:BB over 84.1 innings. The Reds 2012 first-round pick has been developing at a slow pace, perhaps suggesting a low long-term ceiling.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Back in action at Double-A

Travieso (groin) allowed two earned runs over four innings in his last start with Double-A Pensacola.

Travieso went 12 days between starts due to a groin injury that landed him on the minor league disabled list, but he is back in action for Pensacola. Travieso is off to a good start this year, posting a 2.63 ERA and striking out 13 batters in 13.2 innings over three starts.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: On the Double-A DL with groin injury

Travieso is on Double-A Pensacola's DL, retroactive to April 13, with a right groin strain.

In his first two starts at Pensacola, Travieso pitched 9.2 innings, posting a 1.86 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB. The Reds' first-round pick in 2012 will probably spent the vast majority of his season in Pensacola.

  • Reds' Nick Travieso: Likely to start in Double-A

Travieso will probably begin 2016 at Double-A Pensacola. He struggled Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 1.2 innings, striking out one.

Despite the rough outing, Travieso impressed manager Bryan Price. "He's a stud. This kid cannot just pitch, he believes in his stuff," Price said. "He just doesn't back down to people. When you have to try to teach guys or lead guys toward confidence or toughness, that's a challenge. He doesn't lack confidence or trust in his stuff."
