Edwards signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Thursday, per the MLB transaction log. Edwards returned to the Cubs on an NRI deal in January, but he opted out of that contract March 23. He'll rejoin Chicago and start out with Triple-A Iowa. As a member of the Nationals last season, Edwards posted a 3.69 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 24:17 K:BB over 31.2 innings.... See More ... See Less

Carl Edwards: Let go by Cubs
The Cubs released Edwards on Saturday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Manager Craig Counsell confirmed Saturday that Edwards opted out of his minor-league contract. He gave up one earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings in spring training. Edwards could latch on with a team looking for veteran bullpen depth.... See More ... Cubs' Carl Edwards: Pitching well this spring
Edwards, who tossed a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Rockies, has a 0.00 ERA across four spring appearances. Edwards last pitched for the Cubs in 2019, and he was a valuable member of the bullpen for the 2016 World Series winning squad. The righty has bounced around a bit in recent years, but he has a chance to settle into a middle-relief spot with Chicago in 2024. Edwards likely won't have a ton of fantasy value in that role, however.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Carl Edwards: Returns to Cubs as NRI
Edward signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. It's a return to where Edwards first reached the big leagues and had his most successful seasons. Edwards posted a 3.69 ERA and 24:17 K:BB over 31.2 frames with the Nationals in 2023. He missed the last three months of the season with a shoulder issue but presumably will be healthy heading into camp.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Moved to 60-day IL
The Nationals transferred Edwards (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. Edwards had been on the 15-day IL since June 21, so his move to the 60-day IL won't affect his timeline for a return but will open up a spot on the 40-man roster for catcher Drew Millas, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Rochester. Though Edwards began a rehab assignment two weeks ago, he made three appearances before suffering a setback with his right shoulder. He's since been diagnosed with a stress fracture, and it's unclear if he'll be able to pitch again at any point in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Out with stress fracture
Edwards (shoulder) was shut down indefinitely Wednesday after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right scapula, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. The right-hander was already on the shelf with shoulder inflammation, and he apparently didn't feel right after his minor-league rehab outing over the weekend. It's unclear how long Edwards will be shut down from throwing, but the injury could end his campaign if he's unable to get back to throwing within the next couple weeks.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Begins rehab assignment
Edwards (shoulder) started a rehab assignment with the Nationals' Florida Complex League team Monday. Edwards' first appearance with the FCL Nationals didn't go well, as he allowed three runs while recording just two outs. The veteran reliever has been sidelined since late June with right shoulder inflammation, so he figures to need a few more outings before rejoining the big club.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Set for simulated appearance
Edwards (shoulder) is slated for a simulated appearance Friday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. That might be the final step before Edwards is cleared to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old reliever has been sidelined since June 21 due to right shoulder inflammation.... Nationals' Carl Edwards: Resumes throwing
Edwards (shoulder) resumed throwing earlier this week, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Edwards underwent an MRI last Wednesday, shortly after landing on the injured list, and it confirmed the initial diagnosis of right shoulder inflammation. If all goes well with his side work, he might be an option again for the Nationals' bullpen coming out of the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Sent for MRI on shoulder
Edwards (shoulder) was sent for an MRI on his right shoulder Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Edwards landed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday afternoon with a diagnosis of right shoulder inflammation, but the imaging scans will provide a clearer overall scope of the issue. The 31-year-old had been shaping up as a strong trade candidate for the Nationals with a 3.69 ERA through 31.2 innings of setup duty. Maybe he can return sometime in July, ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Lands on IL
The Nationals placed Edwards on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Washington opted to shut Edwards down after he experienced discomfort in his shoulder coming out of his most recent relief appearance in Monday's 8-6 loss to St. Louis. Though his initial diagnosis of inflammation rather than a shoulder sprain or strain bodes well for a speedy recovery, the Nationals aren't putting an official timeline on Edwards' return from the IL. The 31-year-old has been a key setup option this season, nabbing 13 holds, two saves and one win while accruing a 3.69 ERA over 32 appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Secures second save
Edwards picked up a save Thursday against the Astros, striking out one batter in a perfect inning. Hunter Harvey got the first stab at a save for Washington in the ninth inning, but he couldn't protect a 1-0 lead. After the Nationals scored three times in the top of the 10th, Edwards got the call, and he retired the side on 12 pitches (10 strikes). The save was his first since April 8, but with Kyle Finnegan pitching inconsistently of late and Harvey blowing the opportunity Thursday, Edwards could emerge as a more frequent closing option for manager Dave Martinez.... Nationals' Carl Edwards: Rings up 13th hold
Edwards gave up a hit in a scoreless seventh inning to record his 13th hold of the season in Friday's loss to Atlanta. The veteran reliever has matched his hold total from 2022 in less than half the appearances, but Edwards isn't exactly dominating. He's been scored upon in three of his last six games, and his 3.38 ERA on the season doesn't match his shaky 1.50 WHIP or mediocre 21:14 K:BB through 26.2 innings. The Nationals don't have many better options for high-leverage work, however, so Edwards figures to remain in a setup role barring a total meltdown.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Grabs first save
Edwards earned a save against the Rockies on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one batter over one inning. Kyle Finnegan opened the season as Washington's presumptive closer, but he was used in the eighth inning Saturday with Washington holding a five-run lead. After Anthony Banda allowed three baserunners without getting an out in the ninth, Edwards was brought in to shut the door in a save situation. The right-hander didn't look great, allowing an inherited runner to score as well as having a run charged to himself while surrendering three hits, but he was able to strike out Kris Bryant to close things out. It remains to be seen if Finnegan's recent blowup has dropped him out of the closer role -- if that's the case, Edwards could see more ninth-inning opportunities despite his shaky save Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Might be ninth-inning option
Edwards could see save chances if Kyle Finnegan gets shifted into a fireman role rather than being used as a traditional closer, Bobby Blanco of MASN reports. Finnegan still seems likely to see the majority of save chances for the Nationals this season, but there could be saves up for grabs if the right-hander gets the call earlier in games in tight situations. Edwards would be just one of many candidates who could benefit, with Hunter Harvey, Alex Colome, Sean Doolittle (elbow) and Mason Thompson also in the mix depending on matchups and performance. Edwards' reduced velocity was a concern early in camp, but he hasn't allowed an earned run in his last two Grapefruit League appearances while posting a 3:0 K:BB. The 31-year-old had a solid 2022 campaign in a setup role for the Nats, recording double-digit holds for the first time since 2018.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Concerns about velocity
Nationals manager Dave Martinez expressed concern Friday about Edwards' dip in velocity, Andrew Golden of the Washington Post reports. Edwards said he feels fine, but all of his pitches have been down at least a couple of ticks. Maybe that's just part of a routine spring-training buildup, but Martinez told reporters that the situation would be reevaluated Saturday. Edwards was knocked around for four earned runs while recording only one out Friday in a Grapefruit League appearance against the Mets.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Nabs win against former club
Edwards (4-3) earned the win in Monday's 5-4 victory over the Cubs, striking out two in a perfect eighth inning. With the score tied 4-4, Edwards came in to face the team he made his big-debut with back in 2015 and had little difficulty with the bottom of the Cubs' order. The 30-year-old has moved into a high-leverage role with the Nationals, picking up two saves and a win in his last four appearances, and since the All-Star break he's posted a somewhat lucky 3.24 ERA to go with a 1.92 WHIP and 7:5 K:BB over 8.1 innings.... Nationals' Carl Edwards: Possible waiver wire pickups
The presumption when the Nationals lost Tanner Rainey for the year was that Kyle Finnegan would step into the closer role, and he did record the team's first three saves thereafter. But Carl Edwards has recorded the past two, including one Saturday, and in both instances, Finnegan helped set up for him. So is Edwards the closer now? Well, he does have a lower ERA than Finnegan and has been more of a bat-misser in his past. Not so much this year. As bad as the Nationals are, any amount of mixing and matching at the end of games could make the juice not worth the squeeze, but at this point, Edwards should be rostered in more than just 1 percent of leagues.... Nationals' Carl Edwards: Secures second save
Edwards notched a save against the Padres on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning. Kyle Finnegan appeared to emerge as Washington's closer of choice in July, but he handled the seventh inning Saturday and pitched a scoreless frame to pick up the win. It was Edwards who was chosen to close the contest, and he worked around a two-out single to record the save. It may be premature to assume that Finnegan is out as closer, but it's certainly worth noting that Edwards has picked up the past two Washington saves. He's posted a 3.24 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 40:20 K:BB over 41.2 innings on the campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Carl Edwards: Nabs third win
Edwards (3-3) picked up the win in Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks, allowing one hit and walking one over 1.1 scoreless innings. The right-hander entered the game in the sixth inning with the Nationals down 3-2, and Edwards got rewarded when Keibert Ruiz drove home the winning run in the top of the eighth. Edwards has been effective since joining the Washington bullpen in May, and the 30-year-old has a 3.03 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB through 35.2 innings this season, adding seven holds in 30 appearances....
