Guardians' Ben Lively: Yields one run in no-decision
Lively didn't factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks against Atlanta. He struck out five.
Lively has yet to allow more than two runs in a start this season. However, he's gone deeper than five innings in only one of his three appearances. He was pulled at 88 pitches (53 strikes) Sunday and didn't give up a home run for the first time all year. In 15.2 innings, Lively owns a 2.30 ERA with a 10.9 K/9, a massive improvement from his 5.38 ERA and 8.0 K/9 from 2023. He's projected for a start against the Angels on Saturday.

Guardians' Ben Lively: Sharp in no-decision
Lively did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven over 6.1 innings.
Lively held Boston off the board until Wilyer Abreu's solo home run in the seventh inning, though Cleveland couldn't break through against Tanner Houck until the bottom half of the frame, leaving Lively with a no-decision. The 32-year-old right-hander's pitched well in his first two starts this year, both coming against the Red Sox. Lively's allowed three runs through 11.1 innings while posting an impressive 14:1 K:BB. He should get at least one more start before Gavin Williams (elbow) is able to rejoin the rotation -- Lively's currently slated for a tough road matchup in Atlanta on Sunday.

Guardians' Ben Lively: Awarded another start
Lively is scheduled to start Tuesday's series opener with the Red Sox at Progressive Field.
Lively will be making his second turn through the Guardians rotation after he was effective in his MLB debut this past Wednesday in his return from a stint on the 15-day injured list while he recovered from a viral illness. While facing off against the same Boston team he'll face this week at Fenway Park, Lively struck out seven and gave up two earned runs on three hits and one walk over five innings, though he took the loss after being on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel with Tanner Houck. Lively should have a spot in the Cleveland rotation until Gavin Williams (elbow) is ready to return from the 15-day IL, likely in the first or second week of May. Williams made a start at extended spring training Saturday and should head out on a rehab assignment this week, though he'll likely need at least two starts in the minors before being activated from the IL.

Guardians' Ben Lively: Outdueled in 2024 debut
Lively (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over five innings against Boston.
Although Lively was impressive in his first start of the campaign, he wasn't as good as Tanner Houck, who pitched a complete-game shutout. Lively ran into a bit of trouble in the third and fourth innings, bringing in Pablo Reyes on a balk in the third before surrendering a solo homer to Connor Wong in the fourth. With Gavin Williams (elbow) set to miss at least one more trip around the rotation, Lively should receive some opportunities to build on Wednesday's performance. His first chance to do so is tentatively set to come Tuesday in a rematch with the Red Sox.

Guardians' Ben Lively: Activated ahead of start
The Guardians reinstated Lively (illness) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Red Sox in Boston.
Cleveland moved reliever Eli Morgan (shoulder) to the 15-day IL in a corresponding move to make room for Lively, who will be making his Guardians debut Wednesday. Lively got stretched out to 5.1 innings and 55 pitches in his second and final rehab start with Triple-A Columbus last week, so he could have some minor workload restrictions in place in his return from the IL. With Shane Bieber (elbow) out for the season and Xzavion Curry getting optioned to Triple-A following a spot start Monday, Lively could be in line to make multiple turns through the Cleveland rotation until Gavin Williams (elbow) is ready to return from the IL.

Guardians' Ben Lively: Confirmed to start Wednesday
The Guardians plan to reinstate Lively (illness) from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game in Boston, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
The season-ending injury to Shane Bieber (elbow), along with a doubleheader with the Yankees on Saturday, opened up two spots in Cleveland's temporary six-man rotation, and Xzavion Curry (illness) -- who will be activated from the IL to start Monday -- and Lively will be called upon to fill the voids. The Guardians are expected to condense their rotation to five men by the end of the week, however, so how Curry and Lively perform against the Red Sox will likely determine which of the two remains in a starting role moving forward. Lively wrapped up his two-start rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus by covering 5.1 innings and 55 pitches this past Tuesday, so he should face only light workload restrictions in Boston for what will be his season debut with the big club.

After battling a viral illness in spring training that cost him about two weeks of action, Lively opened the season on the 15-day injured list. He might be fully built up by this point, however, as he reached the sixth inning of Tuesday's rehab outing and tossed 55 pitches in the start. Though Lively appeared likely to serve as organizational starting depth in 2024, he could have a clear path to a rotation spot in the short term while Shane Bieber (elbow) and Gavin Williams (elbow) are on the shelf. Bieber is lost for the season, but Williams is expected back in late April or early May.

Lively and Xzavion Curry are opening the season on the shelf due to a respiratory virus that made its way around the Cleveland clubhouse during spring training, according to MLB.com. The plan Tuesday was not to need Lively for that many innings or at all, per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Reds manager David Bell scripted a bullpen game and had the ability for relievers to cover the entire game instead of turning to Lively. The manager had four relievers open the game, but the plan went awry when Cincinnati fell behind early and had a lifeless offense. Reds' Ben Lively: Slated for bulk relief Tuesday
Lively is expected to work as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Fernando Cruz in Tuesday's game against the Twins, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
After being activated from the COVID-19-related injured list last Thursday, Lively looks poised to make his second consecutive appearance as a bulk reliever. While working behind Derek Law in an 8-2 loss to the Tigers in his return to action, Lively took a no-decision after giving up three earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings. Cruz is expected to work just an inning or two Tuesday before turning the game over to Lively, who is the Reds pitcher most likely to factor into the decision. After tossing seven innings of two-run ball in Monday's 7-3 win, Connor Phillips could be poised to remain in the rotation as the No. 4 pitcher rather than Lively.

Per Wittenmyer, Lively is slated for bulk-relief duty Thursday in Detroit once opening pitcher Derek Law exits the contest, likely after one or two innings.
