Hernandez cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Royals' alternate training site Wednesday.
The 27-year-old was designated for assigment over the weekend and will remain in the organization after going unclaimed on waivers. Hernandez will continue to provide catching depth in the 60-man pool, but he's unlikely to rejoin the roster if Salvador Perez, Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria remain healthy.

With Cam Gallagher returning from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of Sunday's series finale with the White Sox, the Royals no longer needed to keep Hernandez around as a third catcher. Oscar Hernandez: Released by Cardinals
Hernandez was released by the Cardinals on Monday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Hernandez signed a minor-league deal in January as a non-roster invitee, but he failed to record a hit over seven plate appearances in spring training before play was suspended. The 26-year-old has struggled in recent seasons and hit just .192/.258/.355 with six home runs and 44 strikeouts over 54 games played at Double-A and Triple-A in 2019.

Cardinals' Oscar Hernandez: Joins Cardinals on minors deal
Hernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
The catcher will receive an invitation to big-league camp as part of the deal. Hernandez is unlikely to be anything other than organizational depth this season, as he's appeared in just 22 major-league games, none of which have come in the last three seasons. He hit .209/.274/.399 in 47 games for Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox's system in 2019.

Hernandez is slashing just .197/.263/.352 in 142 at-bats with Double-A Jackson this season, so the Diamondbacks decided to remove him from the 40-man roster in order to open up a spot for Rubby De La Rosa to join the big-league bullpen. Hernandez has put together a strong spring in a small sample, slashing .294/.368/.647 with two home runs and five RBI over 17 at-bats. He has been bothered by a hamstring issue of late, however.
