  • A.J. Morris: Throws five shutout innings against Venezuela in WBC

Morris threw five hitless innings and allowed just one walk with five strikeouts in a no-decision in Monday's World Baseball Classic game against Venezuela.

Morris was dominant against a fantastic lineup. Venezuela's 3-4-5-6 of Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Rougned Odor and Carlos Gonzalez could contend with the heart of the order of any major league squad. Morris is a free agent who allowed a 6.30 ERA in 10 innings with the Reds last year as a 29-year-old rookie. Perhaps this performance will be enough to get him onto a minor league squad and give him a chance to work his way back to a second chance in the bigs.

  • Reds' A.J. Morris: Hits DL, Diaz recalled

Morris was placed on the 15-day DL on Thursday, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Morris came on in relief Wednesday night but was bothered by soreness in his throwing shoulder. While the Reds are yet to provide an update on his status, the DL placement indicates that it could be something more severe than simple, routine soreness. To temporarily take Morris' spot on the 25-man roster, the Reds recalled Dayan Diaz from Triple-A on Thursday.

Morris will start Tuesday's spring training game against the Brewers, as the Reds continue to turn over all stones in search of a starting rotation.

Morris is unlikely to make the team - he's a 29-year old Triple-A journeyman that pitched mostly in relief last year, but that the Reds are using him speaks volumes about their uncertainty.

  • Reds' A.J. Morris: Signs minor league deal with Reds

Morris signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Friday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

The 29-year-old posted a solid season at Triple-A Indianapolis last season, but had little chance to make his way to the majors with the Pirates' depth in the bullpen. His jump to the Reds organization could provide a much better shot for him to crack the big league roster, but for now it appears he'll continue serving as organizational depth.
