  • Mariners' Andrew Aplin: Sent to minor-league camp

Aplin was sent down to minor-league camp Sunday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

Aplin recorded one hit and three walks in nine plate appearances during spring training. He's expected to begin the season with Triple-A Tacoma.

  • Mariners' Andrew Aplin: Outrighted to Triple-A squad

Aplin was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

The 26-year-old outfielder cleared waivers after being designated for assignment Friday and will remain with the organization, though he'll no longer retain a spot on the 40-man roster. Aplin has yet to make his major league debut and has hit .250 with two home runs across 141 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season.

  • Mariners' Andrew Aplin: Cast off 40-man roster

Aplin was designated for assignment Friday.

Aplin was just acquired from Houston at the end of May, but it seems like his so-so performance with Triple-A Tacoma led the Mariners to send him off the 40-man in order to add Tyler Smith and Tyler Cloyd to the big-league roster. Unless he switches organizations yet again, Aplin seems to be nothing more than an organizational depth piece.

  • Mariners' Andrew Aplin: Dealt to Seattle

Aplin was traded to the Mariners on Wednesday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Aplin was designated for assignment by the Astros on May 22 to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Jordan Jankowski, but the young outfielder caught the Mariners' eye enough to warrant a transaction. Aplin spent the past three seasons with Triple-A Fresno, so he'll likely add organizational outfield depth for Seattle.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Designated for assignment

The Astros designated Aplin for assignment Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Aplin was dropped from the 40-man roster in favor of reliever Jordan Jankowski, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Frenso is a corresponding move. The 26-year-old was in the midst of his third straight season with Fresno and batted .250 with one home run in 105 plate appearances. If Aplin passes through waivers unclaimed, he'll stick around in the organization as outfield depth.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Optioned to minor league camp

Aplin was optioned to minor league camp Wednesday, Julia Morales of ROOT Sports reports.

He remains on the 40-man roster but it's fair to wonder how much longer that will be the case. Aplin struggled in 12 appearances with the big club this spring, going 1-for-9 with a single and two strikeouts, on the heels of a 2016 campaign in which he slashed just .223/.300/.318 in 116 games in the PCL. The 25-year-old does have some speed and is just 25, but the fact that he was included among this round of roster cuts is telling.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Has tenuous hold on roster spot

Aplin is a candidate to be removed from Houston's 40-man roster should the team need a spot during the offseason or spring training, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Aplin, a fifth-round pick in the 2012 draft, took a large step backwards in 2016, his first full season at Triple-A Fresno of the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He's played 219 games with 848 plate appearances over three seasons at the Triple-A level, where he's hit just .245 and struck out in 21 percent of his at-bats. Compare that to his production at the lower levels, where Aplin hit .278 with a strikeout rate of 13 percent, and it paints a picture of a player that has reached a ceiling.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Falters at plate

Aplin has a .202/.313/.274 line after playing 39 games at Triple-A Fresno.

Aplin split time between Triple-A Fresno and Double-A Corpus Christi in 2015, but was deemed worthy of starting 2016 with Fresno. However, he has struggled to find his footing at the plate and had a sub .200 batting average until Tuesday's outing against Triple-A Oklahoma City. An area of Aplin's game that has been particularly problematic is his plate discipline. Aplin's BB/K ratio is currently 0.71, when it's traditionally in the range of 1.13 to 1.32. If his struggles persist, it's possible for Aplin to return to Double-A Corpus Christi for further development.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Sent to Triple-A

Aplin was assigned to Triple-A Fresno on Sunday, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.

There was never much of an opportunity for Aplin to break camp with the Astros, as the team's ample depth in the outfield virtually assured that the 24-year-old would need to suffer a slew of injuries to crack the 25-man roster. Aplin will likely spend most of the season with Fresno, for whom he produced a .275/.392/.348 slash line to go along with 20 steals over 285 plate appearances in 2015.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Not expected to make Opening Day roster

In 11 Grapefruit League appearances, Aplin is 4-for-22 (.182) with a double and an RBI for the Astros.

The outfield is crowded in Houston, with Carlos Gomez, George Springer and Colby Rasmus occupying starting roles, with defensive whiz Jake Marisnick and Preston Tucker behind them as the fourth and fifth outfielders respectively. Aplin will likely open 2016 in Triple-A, where he's spent parts of the last two seasons.

  • Astros' Andrew Aplin: Added to 40-man roster

Aplin was added to the Astros' 40-man roster Friday, the Houston Chronicle reports.

A fifth-round selection in 2012, he has shown good speed and a exceptional approach in four professional seasons, totaling 106 steals and posting a 260:226 BB:K in 427 games. Power isn't a big part of the package -- he had just two homers in 74 games in the PCL last season -- but Aplin has a relatively high floor as a prospect given his ability to control the strike zone.
