  • Tucker Healy: Cut by Mariners

Healy was released by Seattle on Thursday.

  • Athletics' Tucker Healy: Potential 2017 relief option at big league level

Healy, a non-roster invitee who has steadily climbed the A's' organizational ladder since being drafted in 2012, could be a relief option at some point this season due to his consistency and versatility, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "He's got a real heavy sinker; guys don't square him up very often," A's director of player development Keith Lieppman said. "His slider has been a big addition to his repertoire. He's been a setup guy, a closer."

The 26-year-old right-hander was exclusively an outfielder through college, until a suggestion by his manager that pitching might be his most likely ticket to the big leagues set him off on a new course. It proved to be precisely the right path, as Healy has been largely successful since his selection in the 23rd round of the 2012 draft. He boasts a career 2.89 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, .208 BAA and double-digit K/9 figures in all but one of eight minor league stops on the strength of 334 strikeouts over 246 innings. Although he doesn't boast an overpowering fastball, his control and constant willingness to develop have been pivotal to his ascension through the ranks, and could land him on the major league roster at some point in the coming campaign. "What I really enjoyed about Tucker was his evolution into an end-of-the-game guy with stuff that doesn't necessarily play out as a closer - his fastball is 91-92 mph," Steven Scarsone, who's managed Healy at two Triple-A stops, said. "And he did a great job for us last year, when an outsider would say he doesn't have that much. That showed he had matured into a guy who competes, and I think there is a lot more he can accomplish."
