Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup Tuesday versus Oakland, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. With left-hander Alex Wood set to start on the mound for the A's, the lefty-hitting Tellez will step out of the lineup. Connor Joe will fill in at first base Tuesday and bat third.... See More ... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Struggles continue
Tellez went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored Thursday against the Brewers. Tellez hasn't gotten on track at the plate this season and now has only two hits across his last 28 at-bats. He's struck out seven times in that span, and he has only two barrels on 51 batted ball events for the season. The Pirates could ultimately opt to play Connor Joe at first base more regularly if Tellez's struggles continue, and the eventual return of Yasmani Grandal (foot) could also mean that Tellez will lose some plate appearances.... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Providing minimal power
Tellez went 0-for-3 Saturday against the Red Sox. Tellez went hitless for the fourth time in his last six starts and is hitting only .207 overall across 65 plate appearances for the season. To make matters worse, he has only one extra-base hit on the campaign, failing to provide pop in the middle of the Pittsburgh lineup. Already sitting against lefties, it's possible that Tellez also starts to sit against righties due to the solid start to the season for Connor Joe, plus the eventual return of Yasmani Grandal (foot).... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Out again versus lefty
Tellez is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Phillies. He will yield to Connor Joe at first base with the Phillies sending lefty Cristopher Sanchez to the hill. Tellez is 0-for-8 at the dish against left-handers this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Not in Thursday's lineup
Tellez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Philadelphia. Tellez hasn't always been on the bench against lefties this season, but he will be for this one against southpaw Ranger Suarez. Connor Joe is at first base and in the leadoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Reaches base four times
Tellez went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored Saturday against the Orioles. Tellez started his fourth straight game after beginning the season on the bench regularly due to several matchups against lefties. He tallied his second multi-hit game of the campaign, highlighted by an RBI single in the second inning. Tellez has primarily hit sixth in Pittsburgh's lineup and should remain on the large side of a platoon at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting versus lefty
Tellez is out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Nationals. The Pirates are facing a fifth straight left-handed starting pitcher to begin the season, and the lefty-hitting Tellez has now been on the bench on three occasions. Connor Joe will start at first base Monday in Tellez's stead.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Crushes three-run homer
Tellez went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run during Sunday's 9-7 victory over the Marlins. Tellez earned the start against Marlins lefty starter Trevor Rogers and struck out three times prior to crushing a go-ahead three-run homer off right-handed reliever Vladimir Gutierrez in the seventh. It was the first homer of the season for Tellez, who started just two of the four games in Miami due to the Marlins' lefty-heavy rotation. The Pirates are scheduled to face a fifth-straight southpaw Monday in MacKenzie Gore of the Nationals, putting Tellez at risk of sitting for the third time in five games. However, Tellez is slated to be the primary first-basemen against righties, and as the Pirates' schedule normalizes, he will be in line for the bulk of the work.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sits again versus southpaw
Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Tellez went 0-for-2 on Opening Day and will now miss his second straight start as Pittsburgh faces another left-handed starter in Ryan Weathers. Connor Joe will handle first base and bat in the leadoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting out versus lefty
Tellez is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Miami, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Tellez was in there for the opener against left-hander Jesus Luzardo, but he'll sit for this one with the Marlins starting another southpaw in A.J. Puk. Connor Joe will handle first base.... Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Returns to lineup
Tellez (back) will start at first base and bat sixth for the Pirates in Monday's spring contest versus the Phillies, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Tellez was scratched from the Grapefruit League lineup over the weekend with a minor back issue, but he's fine. The 29-year-old is slated to be the Pirates' primary first baseman against right-handed pitching this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Nursing back issue
Tellez was scratched from Saturday's Grapefruit League lineup due to a minor back injury, Greg Brown of SportsNet Pittsburgh reports. The 29-year-old was pulled from the lineup due to an "abundance of caution," so he could return to game action within the next couple days. Assuming Tellez has no additional issues, he should begin the season as the Pirates' primary first baseman.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Lands with Pittsburgh
Tellez signed a one-year, $3.2 million contract with the Pirates on Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Tellez spent over two seasons with the Brewers, and he will remain in the NL Central to fill the Pirates' opening at first base. The 28-year-old slugger took a major step back in 2023, slashing .215/.291/.376 with 13 home runs -- only one of which came after May 23. Despite his recent struggles, Tellez should begin the season as Pittsburgh's primary first baseman, though he will likely step out of the lineup against lefties in favor of Jared Triolo or Connor Joe.... Rowdy Tellez: Dropped by Milwaukee
Tellez became a free agent Friday after being non-tendered by the Brewers, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Tellez slashed just .215/.291/.376 over 105 games (351 plate appearances) in 2023 and was left off the roster for the Brewers' NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Diamondbacks. He popped 35 home runs in 2022 and is only 28 years old, but it's a tough market out there for 1B/DH types.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Left off NL Wild Card Series roster
Tellez is not on the roster for the Brewers' NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Diamondbacks. Jesse Winker (quad/back) essentially made the roster instead. Tellez, 28, slashed just .189/.262/.216 with zero home runs over his final 42 regular-season plate appearances. He hit only one total homer after May 22.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting against righty
Tellez is not in Monday's lineup against the Pirates. Tellez typically sits against lefties, as he did Sunday against Ranger Suarez and the Phillies, but now he's taking a seat for the second game in a row against a righty (Luis Ortiz) -- he also sat Saturday against Aaron Nola. Carlos Santana will start at first base while William Contreras starts at designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Not starting Saturday
Tellez isn't in the Brewers' lineup Saturday against the Phillies. Tellez will get a breather Saturday after going 3-for-10 with three RBI across his last five games. Christian Yelich will serve as Milwaukee's DH with Mark Canha in left field, and Carlos Santana will get the nod at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting against lefty
Tellez is absent from the lineup Tuesday against the Cubs. Mark Canha will play first base and William Contreras will serve as the Brewers' designated hitter as they take on left-hander Justin Steele. The left-handed-hitting Tellez has slashed just .175/.267/.250 in 45 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Drives in four runs
Tellez went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Friday's win over the Padres. Tellez ripped a three-run homer in the third inning and also tacked on an RBI single. Between poor performance and a lengthy stint on the injured list, it was his first long ball since May 22. During that 38-game homerless drought, he posted a brutal .160/.215/.200 slash line. Tellez now owns a .686 OPS with 41 RBI and 13 home runs through 82 games.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Absent from lineup again
Tellez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Tellez started in both of the Brewers' first two games after he was reinstated injured list over the weekend, but the lefty-hitting first baseman/designated hitter has now been on the bench for the last two contests even as the Brewers have faced right-handers on both occasions. He was also removed for a pinch hitter in his first game back. Tellez should still ultimately see plenty of starts in the DH spot for Milwaukee, but perhaps not enough for him to be a viable mixed-league option outside of the deepest leagues. William Contreras is in the DH spot Wednesday, with Victor Caratini catching.... See More ... See Less

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG2H agoWhen hired, Pirates' new regime talked about being player-centric, avoiding one-size-fits-all approaches. What happened? Offensively, it's seeing pitches, working walks & big on swing mechanics. Hard to see how that helps naturally aggressive & more feel-centric hitters.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG3H agoPirates started 20-8 last year. Proceeded to go 5-16. Were 25-24 after 49 GP. This year, started 9-2. In the middle of another 5-16 skid. Currently 14-18. Then again, they had two 5-17 stretches in '22. So much for shortening long losing periods.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf3H ago“We’re never trying to take a pitch over the heart of the strike zone. … We’re trying to hammer the stuff over the middle of the plate and take the best swing at it.” I talked to Andy Haines about the Pirates’ hitting struggles and his messaging/approach https://t.co/Bc1opsSN6t

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG6H agoMaybe the Pirates can just call up Paul Skenes -- have not heard anything, otherwise I would report it -- and have him DH on the days he doesn't start. (Kidding, sorta) Remember this: https://t.co/5Qd3PKm0yw

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf6H agoThat's game. A's 4, Pirates 0. The offense had a chance to tie or take the lead in the seventh and eighth, but they couldn't produce. Quinn Priester allowed a couple of solo HR, but turns in a quality start. Pirates are swept by A's and go 1-5 on west coast trip. They are 14-18

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf10H agoPirates injury updates: Borucki's new working diagnosis is media nerve neuritis/inflammation. Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG1D agoPirates end the night by making 15 consecutive outs, including 6 straight via strikeout. Unreal. They've scored 52 runs in their past 20 games (2.6 avg). They're also 5-15 during that stretch. When does it end?
