  • Twins' Yorman Landa: Dies in car acccident

Landa has died in a car accident in his native Venezuela, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

It's a terrible day for both the Twins and all of baseball. Landa has been with the Twins since signing as a 16-year old from Santa Teresa, Venezuela in 2010, reaching High-A Fort Myers in 2016.

  • Twins' Yorman Landa: Returns to Twins on minors deal

Landa (shoulder) signed a minor league contract with the Twins on Tuesday that includes an invite to spring training, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The Twins declined to tender Landa a contract last week, but he will return to the organization for a seventh season. His invitation to spring training seems like more of a peace offering as Landa wouldn't seem to have a realistic chance to break camp with the big club, having never pitched above the High-A level. Control issues continued to plague Landa during his time with Fort Myers in 2016 (4.8 BB/9) before a shoulder injury put him on the shelf.

  • Twins' Yorman Landa: Non-tendered by Twins

Landa, who didn't pitch after July 24 due to a shoulder injury, became a free agent Friday after he was non-tendered by the Twins, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Landa will likely land a minor league deal somewhere, but he's lost some luster as a prospect after last season. Landa had a 3.24 ERA at High-A Fort Myers with a 8.5 K/9, but had a 4.8 BB/9, only slightly better than his 5.1 BB/9 career average. He was also old for his level at age 22 at High-A, which limits his upside.

  • Twins' Yorman Landa: Continues strong strikeout rates at High-A

Landa has a 2.53 ERA and 34:16 K:BB in 32 innings with six saves for High-A Fort Myers.

Landa has been working as a reliever and closer. He continues to have strong strikeout rates (9.6 K/9) but troublesome walk rates (4.5 BB/9). He'll need better control to thrive at higher levels.
