Jhonny Peralta: Released by Red Sox
Peralta was released by the Red Sox on Thursday, Ryan Hannable of WEEI reports.
Peralta recently signed a minor-league contract with the team June 23, but hit just 8-for-40 with two home runs and five RBI for Triple-A Pawtucket in 10 games. Boston has seen solid production out of Tzu-Wei Lin and Deven Marrero at the hot corner, and didn't foresee any opening for Peralta at the big-league level. Prior to his time with the Red Sox, Peralta was batting .204/.259/.204 during 21 games with the Cardinals. The 35-year-old could wind up joining a contending team in the next couple weeks, but his future is very much up in the air right now.

Red Sox's Jhonny Peralta: Signs with Red Sox
Peralta has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Red Sox and will report to Triple-A Pawtucket next week, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Peralta, who was released by the Cardinals earlier this month, will get another shot at continuing his career with a Red Sox club that's struggled to find a solution at the hot corner this season. The 35-year-old failed to produce over 21 games with St. Louis -- posting a .204 batting average and .462 OPS -- before being dropped from the roster. Peralta will likely be stuck as organizational depth unless he can improve his offensive stats.

Red Sox's Jhonny Peralta: Will play third base at Pawtucket
Peralta, who signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox, will play third base for Triple-A Pawtucket, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.
Peralta gives the organization an additional option at third base, a position at which the Red Sox have been among the worst in MLB this season. Boston's third sackers had a league-worst .577 OPS entering Friday.

Peralta was granted his unconditional release by the Cardinals on Tuesday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
This move seemed to be in the works for a while, as the Cardinals couldn't justify playing Peralta, and there seemed to be little reason to keep him at Triple-A, taking away at-bats from players with a potential future in St. Louis. He was hitting .204/.259/.204 in 58 plate appearances this year, and will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal if he wants to catch on with another MLB organization. The Cardinals will have to pay Peralta the remainder of the $10 million he was slated to earn this season.

The former All-Star's days on the active roster seemed to be numbered for quite a while now, and with Kolten Wong coming off the disabled list, Peralta finally got the hook. The veteran infielder's season has been a disaster, as his batting average sits just above the Mendoza Line and he hasn't recorded an extra-base hit or an RBI this season. His track record of big-league success may be enough to entice a team to pluck him off waivers, although his steady decline over the past couple of seasons doesn't instill much confidence.

Cardinals' Jhonny Peralta: Future with team uncertain
Peralta, who is hitting just .204 and is still seeking his first extra-base hit of the season, faces an increasingly uncertain future with Cardinals, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The veteran infielder hasn't been right since the regular season began and is finding playing time harder to come by due to the success of Jedd Gyorko at third base. Peralta and Gyorko were originally slated to likely work at the hot corner in some sort of platoon, but the latter's success while Peralta was sidelined with a bad reaction to medication has made that a moot point. Meanwhile, second-year man Aledmys Diaz, who hasn't quite duplicated the success of his rookie campaign, is nevertheless entrenched at Peralta's old shortstop spot for the foreseeable future. The 35-year-old is in the final season of a four-year, $53 million contract and has limited no-trade protection, meaning that a move from the team he's been with since 2014 could become reality if the Cardinals find the right deal.

Peralta went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Giants, and he's now 4-for-5 since returning from the disabled list due to an illness.
The veteran infielder has looked like a new man at the plate since his return, singling in a pair of pinch-hit appearances in the first two games of the series against the Giants before reaching safely in three of four plate appearances in Sunday's start. Peralta had slashed .120/.185/.120 over his first 27 plate appearances of the season, a stretch that also included a .149 wOBA. However, it's becoming readily apparent that the virus and subsequent reaction to medication that Peralta endured affected his play significantly, and he could certainly revert back to his typical level of production now that he's returned to full health.

Peralta (illness) was activated off the 10-day disabled list Friday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
An upper respiratory infection has kept Peralta on the shelf since mid-April, but after turning in a successful rehab assignment, he's ready to return to the Cardinals. St. Louis optioned outfield prospect Magneuris Sierra in a corresponding move Friday. Despite being activated, Peralta will have to wait until Saturday to make his return to the lineup.

The Cardinals have received encouraging reports about Peralta's (illness) at-bats with High-A Palm Beach during his rehab stint, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "Feeling strong," manager Mike Matheny said. "I think that energy level is translating into quicker movements."
Peralta hit an ordinary .250 with a pair of singles over eight at-bats across three rehab appearances over the weekend, but he's apparently looked good overall. The veteran appears to be nearing full strength after an upper-respiratory infection and subsequent adverse reaction to medication during April sapped him of a considerable amount of stamina. If he continues setback-free, Peralta could potentially join the Cardinals at some point during their three-game road set against the Marlins that begins Monday.

Peralta (illness) has begun taking grounders and hitting in the batting cage as part of the recovery from an adverse reaction to medication that landed him on the disabled list, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Peralta could be heading back to Florida for some extended spring training or minor-league rehab starts by the end of the coming week if all continues to go well. The veteran infielder suffered a significant scare after medication he was taking for an upper respiratory infection left him weak and lethargic. Those symptoms were largely responsible for Peralta's early-season struggles, which include nine strikeouts in his first 25 at-bats and sluggishness while playing at third base as well. Jedd Gyorko has taken over the starting duties at the hot corner in Peralta's absence and thrived, slashing .321/.397/.643 over 63 plate appearances.
