The Mariners added Diaz to their 40-man roster Wednesday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Diaz got off to a hot start at Triple-A Tacoma, allowing just one earned run while striking out 27 batters across 24 frames through his first four outings. He has since slowed down, but the 27-year-old southpaw still holds a solid 3.18 ERA and 1.10 WHIP alongside a 55:9 K:BB through 51 innings. He will remain in the minors for the time being, but continued success could allow him to make his Mariners debut later this summer -- likely as a long reliever.... See More ... See Less

Mariners' Jhonathan Diaz: Dominating at Tacoma
Diaz has pitched to a 3-0 record, 0.38 ERA and 0.75 WHIP across 24 innings over his first four starts for Triple-A Tacoma. The 27-year-old southpaw has taken well to his new organization after signing a minor-league deal with the Mariners in January. Diaz has allowed just a single earned run for the Rainiers -- all the more impressive given the fact he's toiling in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Diaz mustered a 2-1 record and 3.49 ERA across 28.1 innings during his first two big-league stints with the Angels in 2021 and 2022, but he had a rough seven-inning tenure with Los Angeles last season during which he posted a 10.29 ERA and 2.86 WHIP. Control has been a persistent issue during Diaz's brief big-league stays in the past, but his elite 27:1 K:BB thus far with Tacoma suggests he may be starting to turn a corner in that department.... Mariners' Jhonathan Diaz: Inks minors pact with Seattle
Diaz has signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. Diaz, 27, holds a 4.84 ERA and 24:24 K:BB over 35.1 frames covering parts of three seasons at the big-league level. The left-hander has experience as a starter and reliever and is likely headed to Triple-A Tacoma at the beginning of the 2024 season.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Loses 40-man roster spot
Diaz cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The Angels are doing some 40-man roster housecleaning and Diaz is one of the guys to lose his spot. He will remain in the organization.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Optioned to Triple-A
The Angels optioned Diaz to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. With Jaime Barria (hamstring) returning from the injured list Saturday, Diaz will be squeezed off the major-league roster. The 27-year-old lefty gave up eight runs in seven innings during his stint with the Angels while striking out four batters and walking seven.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Knocked around by Tigers
Diaz allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks over one-third of an inning in relief during Friday's loss to Detroit. When Diaz entered the game for the Angels in the eighth inning, the game was still relatively close, with the Tigers leading 4-1. However, the lefty reliever couldn't keep it that way -- he allowed nine of the 10 batters he faced to reach base, with his only out coming on a sacrifice fly. Diaz had been unscored upon over 4.2 major-league innings coming into Friday, but his ERA now sits at 12.60.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Promoted to majors for start
The Angels recalled Diaz from Triple-A Salt Lake to start Thursday against the Guardians, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Diaz has spent all season with Salt Lake, putting up a 4.55 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 87 innings -- primarily as a multi-inning reliever. He had a solid run with the Angels last season to the tune of a 2.93 ERA over 15.1 frames, and the team will hope to get similar production out of Diaz as he faces a Guardians offense that ranks 27th in baseball with a .689 OPS. Gerardo Reyes was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Reassigned to minor-league camp
The Angels reassigned Diaz to minor-league camp Wednesday. Diaz missed much of last season due to an unspecified injury and was designated for assignment in November. The lefty eventually returned to the Angels on a minor-league contract and got into four games this spring, allowing just one unearned run on one hit while posting a 6:1 K:BB over seven innings. Though he'll likely open the season in Triple-A, Diaz should be among the first candidates for a call-up if Los Angeles has a need for pitching depth during the campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Healthy for spring training
Diaz (undisclosed) has made two Cactus League appearances to date, covering three innings and striking out five while allowing no runs on one hit and no walks. Diaz didn't make any appearances for the Angels or Triple-A Salt Lake after mid-July of the past season due to an unspecified injury, but he's seemingly healthy again heading into the start of the 2023 campaign. The Angels removed Diaz from their 40-man roster in November, and the 26-year-old southpaw then elected free agency before ultimately re-signing with the Halos on a minor-league deal later in the offseason. He'll provide the organization with rotation depth at Triple-A.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Designated for assignment
Diaz (undisclosed) was designated for assignment by the Angels on Friday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. The 26-year-old lefty was up and down with the Angels over the first few months of 2022. He pitched to a 2.93 ERA in 15.1 innings, though an 11:10 K:BB throws cold water on that number. Diaz will hit waivers, making way for Gio Urshela on the Angels' 40-man roster.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: On injured list
Diaz (undisclosed) was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Diaz hasn't pitched for Salt Lake since July 16, and he's now in the IL with the unspecified injury. The 22-year-old seemed likely to be in the mix for a call-up after the Angels traded Noah Syndergaard to the Phillies, but Chase Silseth will instead be promoted to start in Saturday's doubleheader.... Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Optioned to Triple-A
Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday. Diaz gave up three runs on five hits in a 1.2-inning start Friday against the Mets, his lone appearance of his latest big-league stint. On the whole this season, his 2.93 ERA in 15.1 innings looks quite respectable, but his 11:10 K:BB suggests he doesn't deserve a mark nearly that good.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Early exit in loss to Mets
Diaz (1-1) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 1.2 innings as the Angels fell 7-3 to the Mets. He struck out one. After a scoreless first inning, New York chased Diaz from the game with a parade of baserunners capped by a two-run double from Mark Canha. The 25-year-old southpaw began his 2022 stint with the Angels by firing 9.2 shutout frames over two starts, but since the calendar flipped to June, Diaz has been tagged for five runs in 5.2 innings, and his 2.93 ERA disguises a poor 11:10 K:BB through 15.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Starting Friday
Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and is starting Friday's game against the Mets, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Diaz was scratched from Friday's start in Salt Lake and will officially step in to start in the Angels' series opener against the Mets. Over his first three major-league appearances of the season, he's posted a 1.32 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 13.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Likely to start Friday
Diaz was scratched from his start Thursday with Triple-A Salt Lake and is likely to be recalled to start Friday against the Mets, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. The Angels have confirmed they will recall a pitcher from the minors to start Friday. A spot in the rotation opened after Noah Syndergaard was pushed back in the rotation, so Diaz would likely only be making a spot start. Diaz has made three appearances with the big-league club this season and has a 1.32 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 10:8 K:BB across 13.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Returns to minors
The Angels optioned Diaz to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday. As anticipated, Diaz was sent back to the minors one day after serving as the Angels' 27th man in the team's doubleheader Thursday with the Yankees. He appeared in long relief in the Angels' 6-1 loss in Game 1, covering four innings and striking out two while giving up two earned runs on four hits.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Up as extra man
Diaz was called up to serve as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Yankees. Diaz has made a pair of starts at the big-league level this season and has yet to give up a run despite a shaky 8:8 K:BB. It looks as though he'll be available in relief this time around, as Shohei Ohtani and Reid Detmers are lined up to start in the twin bill.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Back at Triple-A
Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. He was up to serve as a spot starter for Saturday's doubleheader, and with the Angels already having six starters ahead of him on the depth chart, he will go back to Triple-A to await another chance to help the big club. He has logged 9.2 scoreless innings with four hits, eight walks and eight strikeouts over two appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Solid in spot start
Diaz tossed 4.2 scoreless frames in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against Oakland. He gave up one hit and four walks while striking out four. He was called up to be the 27th man for the twin bill and has not yet been officially sent back to Triple-A, but that move could be coming Sunday. It seems like Diaz is the presumed seventh option in the rotation for the Angels given the meteoric rise of prospect Chase Silseth, who went from afterthought to being the first player from the 2021 draft to reach the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Jhonathan Diaz: Recalled prior to start
Diaz was recalled by the Angels as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Athletics. Diaz is starting Saturday's matinee against Oakland, and he'll officially be designated as the 27th man for the twin bill. Although he's serving as an extra man Saturday, a strong performance should put him in the mix to serve as the Angels' sixth starter going forward. However, he faces strong competition for the rotation spot after Chase Silseth allowed a hit and two walks while striking out four in six scoreless frames against the Athletics on Friday....
