Player Outlook
Corbin Martin geared up as a reliever during spring training of 2023 but suffered a tendon tear in his right latissimus that required surgery. As such, he didn't pitch last season. It was the second significant injury for Martin, who underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in 2019 that delayed his development. The right-hander hasn't returned to the pre-TJ form he had as a prospect in the Astros system. There is an opening for a fifth starter entering the spring, but it's unclear if Martin will be healthy enough to compete. More should be learned about the organization's plan for the right-hander and his readiness during spring training.

The Orioles claimed Martin off waivers from the Brewers on Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old has previously worked mostly as a starter but has been used exclusively in relief this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Sent to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Martin to Triple-A Reno on Monday. Martin was slow-played this spring after missing all of last season with a tear in the lat tendon of his right shoulder. He's healthy now and could contribute out of the Diamondbacks' bullpen at some point this season. He'll try to sharpen his command at Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Makes spring debut

Martin (lat) allowed one hit and struck one over one scoreless inning in Tuesday's spring game against the Padres. Martin pitched in a game for the first time since last spring. He missed the entire 2023 season due to a tear in the lat tendon of his right shoulder. The right-hander may not have enough time to be ready for the start of the season, but Martin's performance Tuesday suggests he'll get an opportunity to contribute for the Diamondbacks at some point in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Transferred to 60-day IL

Martin (lat) was transferred Friday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Diagnosed with lat tendon tear

Martin has been diagnosed with a right lat tendon tear, JJody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. As Jackson notes, this will cause Martin to miss months and not weeks while he recovers from the injury, and surgery cannot be ruled out at this time. The right-hander was diagnosed with shoulder soreness initially, but imaging revealed the tear. He'll begin the season on the IL, and likely won't be able to help the Diamondbacks until sometime this summer, at the very earliest.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Dealing with shoulder discomfort

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Martin is experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder and will undergo further testing Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Martin fell to his knees in pain immediately after throwing a pitch in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game against the Brewers. It was originally speculated to be an arm/elbow injury for the 27-year-old righty, but a shoulder issue is now confirmed. A better idea of how long Martin may be out for should be gleaned from his test results.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Exits game early

Martin was forced to leave Wednesday's spring training game against Milwaukee after throwing a pitch and collapsing to the ground in pain, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Optioned to Triple-A

Martin was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Monday. Martin was knocked around by Atlanta in his last start, so he will return to Reno for the time being. Martin broke camp with the big club back in April, so he will likely get another shot to show what he can do at the top level before the season ends.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Gives up three homers

Martin (0-1) took the loss Saturday versus Atlanta. He allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in four innings. All of the runs against Martin came via the long ball. He gave up solo shots to Matt Olson and William Contreras as well as a two-run blast also to Contreras. Prior to Saturday, Martin hadn't allowed a homer at the major-league level this year. The poor outing raised his ERA to 4.84 and his WHIP to 1.66 through 22.1 innings. He's added 21 strikeouts and 12 walks in seven appearances (two starts), though his spot in the rotation remains only tenuously in his hands. He should be considered likely to start until Zach Davies (shoulder) or Tyler Gilbert (elbow) can return, which likely means Martin is tentatively set for a home start versus the Rockies next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: In line for another start

Martin is listed as the Diamondbacks' scheduled starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Atlanta. Coming out of the All-Star break, Martin entered the Diamondbacks' rotation as a replacement for Dallas Keuchel, who was designated for assignment. The 26-year-old right-hander limited the Nationals to one earned run over four innings in his first outing for the big club since May 4, but the outing was marred by the five free passes he issued. Despite Martin's bout with wildness, he looks like he'll get at least one more chance to prove he belongs in the big-league rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Wild in first start

Martin allowed a run on four hits and five walks with one strikeout in four innings, taking a no-decision in Sunday's loss to the Nationals. Martin made his first big-league start of the season, but he had trouble finding the strike zone. He threw only 36 of 71 pitches for strikes, though he was able to effectively limit the damage with some help from his defense -- the Diamondbacks turned a double play and picked off Victor Robles on a stolen base attempt. Martin has a 3.93 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB through 18.1 innings in six outings (one start) with Arizona this year. It's not clear if he'll stick in the rotation going forward, but he lines up for a road start in Atlanta next weekend if he gets another start. Martin likely has a path to remain a starter at least until Zach Davies (shoulder) can return, which isn't expected to be until August at the earliest.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Starting Sunday

Martin will start Sunday's game against the Nationals, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. The 26-year-old will have a chance to earn a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation after Dallas Keuchel was designated for assignment Wednesday. Martin made five relief appearances for Arizona earlier this year and posted a 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 14.1 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Candidate for rotation slot

Martin could be an option to enter the Diamondbacks' rotation after the team designated Dallas Keuchel for assignment Wednesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The right-hander has a 5.10 ERA over 12 starts (60 innings) at Triple-A Reno. Martin had been a candidate a month ago for the rotation, but Arizona went with the veteran Keuchel, who eventually logged a 9.64 ERA with 27 hits and seven walks allowed over four starts (18.2 innings). With a decreasing strikeout rate and increasing barrel rate, the Diamondbacks pulled the plug on Keuchel and are expected to look at one of their young hurlers at Reno, including Martin, who was the key piece in the deal that sent Zack Greinke to Houston three years ago. The right-handed Martin has pitched well in back-to-back starts, most recently firing eight shutout innings for the Aces one week ago. The organization may also consider lefty Tommy Henry, who has a 3.55 ERA over 18 starts (96.1 innings) at Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: In mix for rotation?

Martin struck out a career-high 13 batters and walked one over 5.2 innings for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Martin's posted four excellent outings over his last five starts for the Aces, making a strong case to be considered for the open the Diamondbacks' No. 5 starter job. The right-hander has mixed in a curveball more effectively, Arizona assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "I think the curveball gives him a little bit more separation (from his fastball and slider), a little bit more depth," Sawdaye said. "(Earlier this season), he would throw it every once in a while, but he didn't really want to throw it that much. Clearly, now he's throwing it more and it's giving him a little bit more of a swing-and-miss pitch." The Diamondbacks haven't named any starters yet for this weekend's series against the Tigers, but manager Torey Lovullo plans to use a fifth starter during the set. Martin should be a considered a longshot with Dallas Keuchel the most likely candidate.
