Player Outlook
Will Warren dominated down the stretch at Triple-A and has a 70-grade sweeper that averaged over 3,000 RPMs last year to go with a 93-94 mph fastball that touches 97 mph. He also throws an 89-mph changeup and a standard slider that is thrown harder and with less spin than his sweeper. He had a 2.10 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 64 strikeouts in 55.2 innings over his final 10 starts at Triple-A and had a 52.7 percent groundball rate over 99.2 innings at that level. Automated balls and strikes contributed to his 10.9 percent walk rate, and Warren should have good enough control to start long term. He looks like a No. 3 starter on paper and could exceed that projection if the command gains he showed down the stretch hold. Warren tallied 129 total innings and turns 25 in June. He could compete for a rotation spot in spring training, especially if anyone else in the rotation is dealing with an injury.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Shifts to minor-league camp

The Yankees reassigned Warren to minor-league camp Sunday. The right-hander made a strong bid for New York's rotation during spring training but ultimately lost out to Luis Gil, who was named the No. 5 starter Sunday. Warren had a 3.61 ERA over 99.2 innings after making his way to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season, and it's likely only a matter of time in 2024 before he's called up for his big-league debut.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Makes final case for rotation spot

Warren allowed one run on three hits and two walks over five innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. He did not strike out any batters. Warren is in contention for a spot in the Yankees' rotation that is available due to Gerrit Cole facing an extended absence with an elbow issue. Though he didn't punch out any batters Friday, Warren looked good in holding the Mets to a single run over five frames following Luis Gil's two-run, four-inning start. Gil and Warren may be the frontrunners for the team's No. 5 starter role, as both young hurlers have put up solid numbers this spring. Warren had a rough outing against Boston in his most recent Grapefruit League start prior to Friday but has nonetheless managed a 3.52 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB over 14.2 innings this spring.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Remains in mix for rotation

GM Brian Cashman said Sunday that Warren has "kept himself in play" for the Yankees' starting rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. New York is in need of rotation help with Gerrit Cole (elbow) set to begin the season on the injured list, and Warren has been solid during spring training with a 3.52 ERA over 7.2 frames in Grapefruit League action. The 24-year-old righty spent most of last season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and posted a 3.61 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 110:47 K:BB across 99.2 innings. Clayton Beeter, Luis Gil and Cody Poteet are also in the mix, partly due to Luke Weaver (neck) being banged up.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Could get a shot in rotation

Warren is a candidate to step into a starting role to open the season if Gerrit Cole (elbow) needs to miss time, Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media reports. Warren allowed one run in three innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Orioles on Monday, and he's posted a 3.52 ERA over 7.2 frames overall this spring. The right-hander has struck out eight over that span but has also allowed nine hits and three walks. Still, the overall impression he has made has been positive, and the Yankees will likely be looking to fill a rotation spot (at least in the short term) with Cole having recently gotten an MRI and now set for additional testing on his pitching elbow. While Warren will likely be under consideration for a starting role if Cole does indeed need to miss time, he wouldn't be the lone candidate, with fellow youngster Clayton Beeter -- who has also had a strong spring and who, unlike Warren, is already on the 40-man roster -- probably representing his stiffest competition, with Luis Gil also in the mix.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Closing strong at Triple-A

Warren struck out a season-high 10 batters over five scoreless innings Sunday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Warren has one of the better sliders at Triple-A and a pair of low-to-mid 90s fastballs, with him throwing his sinker more often while getting more whiffs off the four-seamer. That sinker/slider combo has helped him generate groundballs at a 51.8 percent clip at Triple-A. Warren has come on strong, logging a 2.13 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 57 strikeouts in 50.2 innings over his last nine starts. He could join the big-league rotation sometime next year.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Climbs to Triple-A

The Yankees promoted Warren from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. According to Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune, Warren is slated to make his debut for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday versus Charlotte. The 23-year-old right-hander earned the appointment to the Yankees' top affiliate after submitting a 2.45 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB across 29.1 innings for Somerset.

  • Yankees' Will Warren: Strikeout rate up at Double-A

Warren has a 2.45 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 39 strikeouts in 29.1 innings for Double-A Somerset. The 23-year-old righty upped his strikeout rate from 20.6 percent in 18 Double-A starts last year to 32.2 percent in a return to the level this season. His walk rate has also jumped (from 8.2 percent to 9.9 percent), but his .371 BABIP is also to blame for his overlarge WHIP. Warren's middling strikeout rate in 2022 limited the offseason buzz, but he is trending up this season and should soon get a bump to Triple-A.
