J.J. Hardy: Career likely over
Hardy declined to admit that he's retired from professional baseball, but the 36-year-old recently acknowledged that he's not actively pursuing any playing opportunities, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. "I guess it would probably take a lot, but I'm not going to go out there and say that I'm completely done," Hardy said. "If you look at it realistically, probably. But I'm not going to come out and say it."
Hardy hasn't appeared in an MLB game since October 2017 and didn't even land an invitation to big-league spring training either of the past two years. At this point, Hardy would probably have to revive his career in the independent ranks if he were serious about playing, but that's an unlikely outcome for a player who made more than $80 million over parts of 13 seasons in the big leagues. Hardy won three Gold Gloves and earned two All-Star nods while batting .256 over 1,561 career regular-season contests with the Brewers, Twins and Orioles.

J.J. Hardy: Orioles decline club option
Baltimore decided to decline Hardy's $14 million club option for the 2018 season, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
Hardy will get a $2 million buyout from the team and becomes a free agent heading into this winter. The shortstop only played in 73 games this year due to a broken wrist that kept him out from late June to early September, and he wound up slashing just .217/.255/.323 with four home runs and 24 RBI when he was on the field. The 35-year-old will look to latch on with a new organization in the coming months, although his days as a starting shortstop may have come to an end.

Orioles' J.J. Hardy: Receives first start since June
Hardy is in the starting nine for Saturday's game against the Yankees.
Although Hardy was reinstated from the disabled list (wrist) over a week ago, the shortstop hasn't received any playing time since his return to the active roster. The 35-year-old will be back at his typical spot in the field while hitting out of the seventh spot for Saturday's affair. Over the course of the 2017 season, Hardy is slashing .211/.248/.308 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 64 games.

Orioles' J.J. Hardy: Reinstated from disabled list
Hardy (wrist) was activated from the 60-day DL prior to Friday's game against the Indians.
Hardy has been on the shelf since June 19 with a broken wrist but is finally ready to rejoin the big-league club after a long recovery, which included nine rehab appearances with Triple-A Norfolk. In a corresponding move, Baltimore designated Andrew Faulkner for assignment. While Hardy's presence should add extra depth to the middle of the infield, his impact may wind up being minimal through the rest of the season, since Tim Beckham has locked down the job at short for the club since coming over at the trade deadline.

Hardy (wrist, elbow) was able to complete pregame throwing and hitting drills Thursday, The Baltimore Sun's Eduardo A. Encina reports.
If all goes well, Hardy could be reinstated from the 60-day DL ahead of Friday's game in Cleveland. The shortstop has been out since mid-June with a fractured right wrist, but has experienced some elbow discomfort following a rehab assignment. Upon his return, it's likely that Hardy will settle into a bench role behind Tim Beckham.

Orioles' J.J. Hardy: Trending toward Friday return
Hardy (wrist) is expected to return from the 60-day disabled list this week and could play as soon as Friday against the Yankees, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports.
It's possible that the Orioles will activate Hardy from the DL prior to the weekend series with the Yankees, but it's not expected he'll play in any of the remaining four contests of the homestand before the team heads to the Bronx. Hardy, who has been sidelined since June 18 with a fractured right wrist, has fully healed from the injury but experienced some minor elbow discomfort after completing his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday. He treated the injury with a cortisone injection and will go through a workout Sunday and Monday, at which point it should be clarified when exactly he'll come off the DL. With Tim Beckham having stabilized the shortstop spot since being acquired from the Rays on July 31, Hardy looks like he'll be in store for a bench role upon returning to the Orioles.

Orioles' J.J. Hardy: Likely out a few more days
Hardy (wrist/elbow) is expected to miss a few more days after having an injection to treat tennis elbow-like symptoms, Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Hardy is currently on the 60-day disabled list while working his way back from a fractured wrist. He was initially expected to rejoin the team Friday, but this latest setback will push back his arrival by a few days, per manager Buck Showalter. Hardy went 0-for-3 with a walk in his first live action since going down on June 18. With such a long layoff, the O's will take it slow with the shortstop, and the team has no reason to rush the process considering the fine play of Tim Beckham. Hardy is expected to begin a rehab assignment this week as he has finally worked his way beyond dry swings and into soft toss. Considering the Orioles have the red-hot Tim Beckham at shortstop -- with a .491/.509/.868 batting line in 13 games for Baltimore -- they have little incentive to rush Hardy back to the majors. Hardy continues to progress well from the right wrist fracture he sustained in mid-June. The Orioles needed to clear a 40-man roster spot for recently acquired infielder Tim Beckham, and given that Hardy still needs some time on the shelf before returning, he'll wind up being the roster casualty. This designation means that Hardy will not be able to return to the active roster until Aug. 18, although that's likely around the time he would've returned to action anyway, since he hasn't gotten back to baseball activities yet.

With a broken rib behind him, Hardy is now waiting on his fractured wrist to heal before getting back to baseball. He's scheduled to meet with a specialist after traveling with the team on next week's road trip. At that point, Hardy's ultimate fate for 2017 may finally become clear. Regardless, Hardy should be on waivers across all formats until he not only comes back, but provides better than the .211/.248/.308 slash line he posted in 64 games before the injuries.

Hardy's rib injury is fully healed, but he remains on the 10-day disabled list with a right wrist fracture, The Associated Press reports.
That's one broken bone fixed, but now the shortstop will need to wait for a second to heal. Unfortunately for Hardy, clearing this hurdle doesn't mean he can get back to action any time soon. The 34-year-old is still at least a couple of weeks away from returning to baseball activity.

With Hardy recently diagnosed with a broken rib in addition to his fractured wrist, he'll rest up through the All-Star break before potentially kicking off the rehab process in earnest before the end of July.
