Giants' Matt Cain: Fires five scoreless inning in farewell
Cain pitched five scoreless innings with four strikeouts during Saturday's loss to San Diego. He didn't factor into the decision.
Cain announced his retirement earlier this week, and he left Saturday's outing in position to take the win. Unfortunately, the bullpen blew the lead and cost Cain and San Francisco the victory. The 32-year-old veteran was a fantasy stalwart from 2007 through 2012 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 7.4 K/9 over 1,299.2 innings and 197 starts. While he struggled over the final years of his career, Cain was still a three-time All-Star and won two World Series titles.

Giants' Matt Cain: Will retire following Saturday's start
Cain announced that he will retire following his last start of the 2017 season, which will come against the Padres on Saturday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Cain said that he made the decision over the last week, and reiterated his feelings Wednesday by saying that he can't see himself playing outside of San Francisco, and that he believes Saturday will be his last time in a Giants uniform. Although this doesn't completely close the door on Cain's career, he seems fairly adamant about moving on at this point in time, even holding a meeting with his teammates to discuss the decision. Over the course of this season, the three-time All-Star has posted a 5.66 ERA and 1.70 WHIP during 119.1 innings of work, with 22 of his 26 appearances coming as a starter.

Giants' Matt Cain: Will start Saturday
Cain has been named the starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Padres, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Cain will occupy the spot in the starting rotation that became available when Madison Bumgarner was shut down for the remainder of the season Tuesday. He draws a favorable matchup against the Padres, but should still likely be avoided in fantasy matchups as the 32-year-old's floor is much lower than his ceiling is high.

Giants' Matt Cain: Rejoins team Monday
Cain (personal) has rejoined the Giants and completed a bullpen session Monday, the Associated Press reports.
Cain made his last appearance Aug. 31 before leaving the Giants a few days later to tend to a family matter. Because of the multi-week absence, he'll likely need to get in another bullpen session to condition his arm before being available for games. Manager Bruce Bochy stated that he'd like to have Cain make one appearance out of the bullpen before the season concludes.

Giants' Matt Cain: Away from team with family issue
Manager Bruce Bochy said Cain will miss the upcoming series against the Rockies while attending to a family matter, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Bochy said he'll likely miss the road trip as well, lining him up to return next Monday against the Dodgers. Cain should resume a long-relief role in the Giants' bullpen when he returns.

Giants' Matt Cain: Thrust into start Thursday
Cain will start Thursday's game against the Cardinals in place of Madison Bumgarner (illness), Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Bumgarner was a late scratch due to flu-like symptoms, so Cain will step in to make a spot start in his place. The 32-year-old Cain owns an unsightly 5.35 ERA and 67:43 K:BB across 21 starts (109.1 innings) this season. He's expected to return to the bullpen following Thursday's outing.

Giants' Matt Cain: Takes loss in spot start
Cain (3-11) tossed five innings of two-run ball Thursday, giving up seven hits and striking out two in a losing effort against the Cardinals.
Cain was called upon to fill in for Madison Bumgarner (illness) on short notice Thursday. The former starter didn't necessarily pitch poorly in his return to the rotation, but it certainly wasn't enough to convince manager Bruce Bochy to give his veteran another chance at starting regularly. The Giants are currently operating with a six-man rotation, so Cain should head back to the bullpen assuming Bumgarner's illness doesn't cost him any more time.

Giants' Matt Cain: Goes four innings in loss
Cain (3-10) was charged with five runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk over four innings in a loss to the Marlins on Wednesday. He struck out seven.
Two San Francisco errors led to a four-run first inning, and while Cain rebounded and finished strong, the damage was already done. Chances are, Cain will return to the bullpen following this outing -- the Giants just needed an extra starter this week following Sunday's doubleheader. Perhaps he will get a few more chances to start down the stretch, but regardless, Cain should remain far from mixed-league rosters.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Cain will start Wednesday's game against the Marlins, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The Giants will need an extra starter this week after Sunday's doubleheader, so Cain, who was shifted to the bullpen at the beginning of August, will re-enter the rotation to make a spot start Wednesday. The 32-year-old, who compiled a 5.38 ERA and 1.67 WHIP through 20 starts earlier in the season, will likely return to a relief role following Wednesday's outing.

Cain was uninspiring but effective enough to keep the Giants in the game. With Johnny Cueto unable to finish his rehab start on Monday, there may be more opportunities in the rotation for Cain yet. He hasn't shown anything this year to suggest he's a better pitcher than his 5.37 ERA, but the Giants aren't exactly swimming in rotation options.

Cain will line up for another start Sunday against the Dodgers, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
After Johnny Cueto (finger) threw a successful bullpen session Tuesday, there was some question whether Cain would draw a second turn during the week after starting in Monday's loss to the Pirates, but he will in fact receive another nod with the Giants opting to give Cueto more time to rest up. Since Cain was lit up for six runs (two earned) while lasting only four innings Monday, he's already sullied the two-start week for fantasy owners, and expecting a rebound performance against one of the league's top offenses might be wishful thinking. Cueto could rejoin the rotation as soon as the Giants' series opener next Monday against the Athletics, which would likely result in Cain moving back to the bullpen.

Giants' Matt Cain: Struggles continue Monday
Cain (3-9) allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk over four innings during Monday's loss to the Pirates. He recorded one strikeout.
The Pirates got to Cain early, posting a two-run first inning followed by a four-run second that was punctuated by a three-run blast off the bat of Andrew McCutchen. Cain retired the side in order over the next two frames but was given the hook after tossing 72 pitches through the first four innings. The 32-year-old did nothing to suggest he should remain in the starting rotation, but with Johnny Cueto still working through his finger blister, Cain could potentially be in line for a weekend start at Dodger Stadium.

Giants' Matt Cain: Tosses quality start Wednesday
Cain gave up three runs on five hits while striking out five Wednesday. He did not factor into the decision in a 5-4 win over Cleveland.
Cain was aggressive against an Indians lineup sans Edwin Encarnacion, throwing 52 of his 79 pitches for strikes. After a brief demotion to the bullpen, the 32-year-old regained a spot in the rotation to replace the injured Johnny Cueto (hand). The latter is hopeful he can return off the disabled list when eligible June 24, which could push Cain and his 5.49 ERA back to the bullpen, although the Giants could make a move at the trade deadline that opens up a rotation spot. Either way, the veteran righty is no longer a pitcher to rely on outside of very favorable matchups due to his extremely inconsistent results this season.
