For the past few days, recently retired future Hall of Famer Paul Pierce has been telling anyone who will listen that he thinks Kevin Durant is on his way to surpassing LeBron James as the NBA's best player.

After Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Pierce said that Durant "may be the best player in the world today." He later doubled down, saying "What we're witnessing is the changing of the guard. [Kevin Durant is] the new best player in the NBA."

So after Durant closed out Game 3 by scoring seven points in the final 1:15 to beat the Cavs, Pierce was ready with the "truthjuice" on Twitter.

In theory, Pierce could be onto something. Durant is four years younger than James, and you would have to think that at some point James is going to start to decline. At that point, Durant could overtake him as the best player in the league ... but that certainly hasn't happened yet.

James nearly had a 40-point triple-double in Game 3 with 39 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, and he has put up similar numbers throughout the series. Perhaps if you put James on the same team as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, he would look like the best player in the world again.
