Edmonton at Phoenix

Oilers 4, Coyotes 2

CBSSports.com wire reports

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Raffi Torres was going to have to wait for the highlight shows to see his go-ahead goal.

Torres scored twice, including a goal on a circus shot with 8:05 to play, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 on Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

"That was the best game he's played and not just from a productivity standpoint," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "Every time he touched the puck he made a play."

Phoenix goalie Alex Auld kicked away Ales Hemsky's shot from the slot into the left faceoff circle. Torres, skating away from the goal, reached back over his left shoulder and swept the puck off Auld's left pad and into the net to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead.

"I was trying to spin and get it on net," Torres said. "I didn't really see it. The puck was there and I just tried to do anything I could."

Shawn Horcoff added an empty-net goal with 52 seconds remaining, just as Auld reached the bench after leaving the crease.

Brodziak and Shawn Horcoff also scored for the Oilers, who won for the first time in four road games despite managing only a season-low 18 shots on goal.

Mike Zigomanis tied the game at 2 with 11:49 to go, taking a pass from Mathias Tjarnqvist and beating Dwayne Roloson for his first goal and first point of the season.

Peter Mueller scored his first career goal for the Coyotes, who have lost two straight.

"Our effort was solid. We didn't give up a lot of chances. We did a lot of things really well tonight," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "We just came up on the short end again. We've got to find a way to figure out the things we need to do to win."

Roloson made 39 saves, including a handful after losing his stick early in the Coyotes' first power play. Roloson continued playing without a stick rather than taking one from a defenseman and it worked until Torres scored eight seconds after the penalty expired. He took a pass from Hemsky from behind the net and fired a shot past Auld's blocker at 6:19 of the first.

"He claimed the referee told him it was going to be a penalty if he didn't move (the stick)," MacTavish said. "So that's why he tried to do what he tried to do."

Mueller, the Coyotes' first-round pick and the eighth overall selection in the 2006 entry draft, tied the game at 7:29 of the second when he tapped in a rebound from the top of the crease.

Mueller had been a healthy scratch in the Coyotes' previous game.

"I wanted to make it known that I want to play and I will work hard on the ice and off the ice," Mueller said. "It's awesome to score the first goal but, you know, it doesn't matter. It's for the boys, getting two points on the board."

Brodziak made it 2-1 at 14:54 of the second when he redirected a shot from the point by Dick Tarnstrom.

"They capitalized on the very few chances they did get," Auld said.

Roloson stopped Fredrik Sjostrom on a breakaway midway through the first period to preserve a one-goal lead. ... Phoenix's 41 shots were a season high. ... Oilers C Andrew Cogliano assisted on Torres' second goal and leads Edmonton with six points in seven games. ... Tjarnqvist was playing in his 100th career game.
