In response to a report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Sidney Crosby was set for arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist, Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford released a statement to address the situation and clear the air. Crosby did indeed suffer an injury to his right wrist at an undisclosed time last season and surgery is an option, but whether or not the NHL’s MVP should have surgery has not yet been decided.

“Sidney Crosby has been undergoing treatment on a right wrist injury that he suffered during the season,” said Rutherford in his statement released by the team. "Sid is continuing to get medical advice to determine the best path moving forward, including the possibility of arthroscopic surgery. No final decision has been made on surgery at this point. We expect to have a decision by early next week.”

The Post-Gazette reported Wednesday that Crosby was expected to undergo the surgery within days and that very well may end up being the case in the end. The source quoted in the report also noted that Crosby was definitely hindered by the injury during the playoffs as he couldn't play the same way.

Crosby had just nine points in 13 playoff contests. It was the first time in his career he averaged less than a point-per-game in the postseason. He managed just three points in the second-round series against the New York Rangers as well.

Whatever the decision in this situation, it likely will have to come soon. As the Penguins look to take steps forward as an organization following the ouster of the coaching staff and general manager, they’ll need their top player healthy and at his best.
