Matt Moulson: Moving on in career
Moulson joined the Maple Leafs as a pro scout Tuesday, officially ending the 38-year-old's pro career, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports.
Moulson last played in the NHL in 2017-18 with the Sabres. He spent the last four seasons in the AHL with Ontario and Hershey. The winger ended with 369 points in 650 NHL contests, and he will now join his hometown team as he begins a scouting career.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Cut loose
Moulson was waived by the Sabres on Friday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
While Moulson's contract wasn't bought out, the Sabres made it clear back in June that Moulson wouldn't be retained for the upcoming season. The veteran winger only appeared in 14 games for Buffalo last year -- he was held pointless and skated to a minus-9 rating over that span.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Future not in Queen City
Moulson will not be suiting up for the Sabres next season, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
According to general manager Jason Botterill, the Sabres won't be buying out Moulson's contract; however, the club will look to either trade him or figure out another AHL loan stint. The veteran has one year left on the five-year, $25 million deal he signed with Buffalo in July of 2014, but simply hasn't been productive enough to warrant keeping him around -- he failed to tally a point in 14 contests for the Sabres last season.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Contract should remain intact
Moulson is unlikely to have his contract bought out by the Sabres before the June 30 deadline, The Buffalo News reports.
Sabres GM Jason Botterill could save the Swords $666,667 by purchasing Moulson's contract, but that's not that much money in the grand scheme of things, and going that route also means that Buffalo would have to leave Moulson on the books through 2019-20 when he's technically only signed for one more season at $5 million. Either way, it's a tough pill for Botterill to swallow, especially considering that the winger was held pointless with a minus-9 rating over 14 games last season. The team could try to deal him and provide something more favorable to the acquiring partner in an effort to rid him out of the system, as he clearly doesn't fit into the rebuilding Sabres' plans.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Riding hot streak
Moulson has scored nine points in five games with AHL Ontario since getting loaned by the Sabres, John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports.
It's a good sign for Moulson, who is hoping to revitalize his NHL career after getting demoted. His five-year contract has been a nightmare for the Sabres, and despite making it known they're willing to retain salary to facilitate a trade, there have been no takers. Before people get too excited about Moulson's recent scoring streak, keep in mind that his only goal came in a 6-1 blowout loss, and four of his assists came in one game against Texas. He's playing in a scoring role in the AHL, but still lacks the conditioning and quickness to play that role in the NHL. Moulson will need to keep this up to get back in Buffalo's good graces.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Sent to AHL Ontario
Moulson was reassigned to AHL Ontario on Tuesday.
Rather than sending Moulson to the Sabres' affiliate -- AHL Rochester -- he instead will go out on loan to AHL Ontario, which is tied to Los Angeles. General manager Jason Botterill stated the team "felt that with our young forwards in place in Rochester, we did not want to take away from their development and ice time by adding another veteran player at this time." If the winger is going to be traded to another club, the Kings would appear to have the inside track, although Buffalo would likely have to retain some of his $5 million cap hit.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Designated for waivers
Moulson was placed on waivers Monday for the purpose of reassignment, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
The move to send Moulson down to the minors could indicate Jacob Josefson (ankle) is nearing a return and could be back in the lineup against Colorado on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Moulson has played in a mere 14 games (sitting for another 13), so it doesn't come as a huge surprise he is headed down to the minors -- if he goes unclaimed.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Returns to lineup
Moulson will play Tuesday against Tampa Bay after sitting out as a healthy scratch, the Olean Times Herald reports.
Moulson last played on Nov. 14 against Pittsburgh, skating just 8:57 before sitting out for six straight games. Not much has changed for the Sabres, who have the worst record in the Eastern Conference and the second worst goal differential in the league. Moulson has yet to score this season and scored just 22 goals over the past two, so it's unlikely that he'll move the scales against Tampa. He'll skate on the right wing with Zemgus Girgensons, who is also struggling, and rookie Kyle Criscuolo.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Remains pointless
Moulson received 12:29 of ice time and threw one shot on net in Saturday's 2-1 overtime loss to Montreal.
Moulson has yet to find the scoresheet this season after 11 games, which is surprising since he put up 32 points in 81 games last year. The 34-year-old has only shot the puck on net eight times this year, as well, despite averaging 1:32 of power-play time. Moulson is too talented to be held pointless for much longer, but it's clear his best days are behind him.

Moulson is likely to tag into Saturday's lineup versus the Islanders, who are playing host in the contest, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
The Swords are making some adjustments to their lineup amour, as Moulson's projected to tag in after missing Opening Night against the Habs. He produced 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) despite averaging only 11:36 of ice time last season, and you're likely to find him cheap in daily formats since he's a bottom-six filler who didn't get to play in that first game.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Made available to Vegas
Moulson was not protected and will be exposed for the expansion draft.
The move comes to no surprise as the Sabres look to offload Moulson's hefty contract, which has two years remaining with a $5 million cap hit. Despite missing just seven games over the past three seasons, Moulson has been very disappointing, scoring just 35 goals during that span while seeing his ice time dip to a career-low 11:36 this past season. Moulson's play and production don't make him particularly valuable to Vegas, but remember the Golden Knights have to take $45 million worth of contracts for the expansion and meet or exceed the cap floor by the start of the season, so Moulson's contract could come in handy. If Vegas passes on Moulson, it's unlikely the Sabres will be able to move his contract, which means he'll play a bottom-six role yet again for the 2017-18 season.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Could attract Golden Knights
Moulson could be courted by Golden Knights GM George McPhee in the upcoming expansion draft, The Buffalo News reports.
There's a personal connection here; as noted in the report, the Vegas boss is the godfather to Moulson's wife, Alicia. Whether or not the desert becomes his true destination, the winger is a virtual lock to be exposed in the expansion draft given that he's a 33-year-old on the books for $5 million in each of the next two seasons. Moulson showed that he could still be productive, however, as he notched 14 goals, 18 assists and 18 points on the man advantage over 81 games this year. NHL teams won't be giving up their top assets if they can help it, so a traditional third-liner on the downslope of his career in Moulson could prove to be a perfect fit -- if he does move to Vegas, expect a significant rise in ice time over the 11:36 he most recently averaged with the Swords.

Sabres' Matt Moulson: Returns to the mix
Moulson will return to the lineup Wednesday against the Canadiens, the Sabres' official site reports.
Down to their last three regular-season games, the Sabres will reintroduce Moulson and Nicolas Deslauriers to their lineup at the expense of C.J. Smith and William Carrier. Per the report, Moulson -- a healthy scratch Monday -- is projected to skate on a line with Deslauriers and Zemgus Girgensons in his return to the mix. The 33-year-old winger has recorded 14 goals and 32 points in 78 games to date.
