Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Hangs up skates
MacKenzie (shoulder) has retired from the NHL, George Richards of The Athletic reports.
Although MacKenzie will no longer be involved as a player, the 37-year-old vet has already transitioned into the second stage of his NHL career as an assistant coach for the Panthers. The 1999 fifth-round pick will retire having racked up 51 goals and 125 points in 611 appearances during his illustrious 16-year career.

Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Out indefinitely following surgery
MacKenzie (shoulder) underwent surgery on his injured shoulder and will be sidelined indefinitely, the team announced Tuesday.
While the Panthers described the surgery as successful, it's certainly a possibility that MacKenzie will have to hang up his skates considering he is 37 years of age. The veteran will almost certainly miss the bulk of the 2018-19 campaign, and could be hard pressed to make his way back into the lineup. Selected in the fifth round of the 1999 NHL Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers, the Ontario native has played in 611 NHL games in which he has compiled 51 goals, 74 assists and 337 PIM.

As expected, the Panthers placed MacKenzie (shoulder) on injured reserve Friday, George Richards of The Athletic reports.
MacKenzie will be sidelined indefinitely once he undergoes shoulder surgery after the Panthers return from their trip to Finland, so this move doesn't come as a surprise. The veteran forward can be ignored in all fantasy formats.

MacKenzie has been sidelined since Opening Night against the Lightning. Unable to practice due to his absence, it appears the center and the team decided surgery was the best course of action. Look for the 37-year-old to be placed on injured reserve in the coming days in order to free up a roster spot.

The Florida captain is locked into a fourth-line role with an emphasis on killing penalties. The minimal usage is certainly discouraging for the 36-year-old, who's totaled nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 38 games so far in 2017-18. Since MacKenzie also skates on the fourth line and only totaled 16 points last season, it's unlikely his point production will see much of an increase.

MacKenzie collected two assists through just 12:25 of ice time during Thursday's 6-4 win over Winnipeg.
Interestingly, the last time MacKenzie marked the scoresheet, it was also a two-assist showing. This multi-point outing has the veteran up to only six assists through 23 games for the season, and with an average of just 11:38 of ice time per contest, MacKenzie is far from a reliable fantasy asset. Don't fret ignoring him.
