  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Hangs up skates

MacKenzie (shoulder) has retired from the NHL, George Richards of The Athletic reports.

Although MacKenzie will no longer be involved as a player, the 37-year-old vet has already transitioned into the second stage of his NHL career as an assistant coach for the Panthers. The 1999 fifth-round pick will retire having racked up 51 goals and 125 points in 611 appearances during his illustrious 16-year career.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Out indefinitely following surgery

MacKenzie (shoulder) underwent surgery on his injured shoulder and will be sidelined indefinitely, the team announced Tuesday.

While the Panthers described the surgery as successful, it's certainly a possibility that MacKenzie will have to hang up his skates considering he is 37 years of age. The veteran will almost certainly miss the bulk of the 2018-19 campaign, and could be hard pressed to make his way back into the lineup. Selected in the fifth round of the 1999 NHL Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers, the Ontario native has played in 611 NHL games in which he has compiled 51 goals, 74 assists and 337 PIM.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Placed on IR

As expected, the Panthers placed MacKenzie (shoulder) on injured reserve Friday, George Richards of The Athletic reports.

MacKenzie will be sidelined indefinitely once he undergoes shoulder surgery after the Panthers return from their trip to Finland, so this move doesn't come as a surprise. The veteran forward can be ignored in all fantasy formats.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Set for shoulder surgery

MacKenzie will undergo shoulder surgery and is expected to miss a significant chunk of time, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

MacKenzie has been sidelined since Opening Night against the Lightning. Unable to practice due to his absence, it appears the center and the team decided surgery was the best course of action. Look for the 37-year-old to be placed on injured reserve in the coming days in order to free up a roster spot.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Yet to return to practice

MacKenzie (upper body) did not participate in Monday's practice, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

The team was hopeful MacKenzie would return for last Saturday's game against the Canucks, but the 37-year-old has yet to rejoin the team in practice. Even once MacKenzie is fully healthy it is not a guarantee that he sees action right away, given the current success of the Panthers' fourth line being centered by rookie Juho Lammikko.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Remains sidelined

Mackenzie (upper body) will miss a second consecutive game Saturday against Vancouver, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

The 37-year-old forward is still dealing with an upper-body injury, and the Panthers have yet to release any information regarding a specific timetable for his recovery. Juho Lammikko will continue to occupy a bottom-six role until MacKenzie is given the green light to return.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Out Thursday

MacKenzie (upper body) won't be in the lineup for Thursday's home opener against the Blue Jackets, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

Coach Bob Boughner is hopeful MacKenzie will be able to return to action Saturday against Vancouver, but at this point he should probably be considered questionable at best for that contest. Either way, the veteran pivot only totaled three goals and 14 points in 75 games last campaign, so there's no reason for fantasy owners to keep tabs on his status.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Likely to miss Thursday's home opener

MacKenzie (upper body) is likely to miss Thursday's home opener versus Columbus, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

MacKenzie left Saturday's game in the first period, with what was initially thought of as a minor injury. Given the news that the 37-year-old veteran is doubtful for Thursday's contest, perhaps there was more damage done than originally thought. However, another update is likely to come ahead of Thursday's clash that will confirm MacKenzie's status moving forward.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Injured Saturday

MacKenzie (upper body) left Saturday's game against the Lightning and will not return, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

MacKenzie left the game during the first period and the team decided to hold him out for the rest of the night. Fortunately, Florida doesn't play again until Thursday against the Blue Jackets, so he should have plenty of time to recover. Another update on the severity of his injury could be available after the game.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Diminished role hurts fantasy value

MacKenzie posted just three goals and 14 points during the 2017-18 season.

The 36-year-old center averaged just 11:18 of ice time per game this season. He also recorded just 86 shots on goal and finished with a minus-9 rating. MacKenzie has never been a big fantasy asset, but at this point his value is fairly nonexistent.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Fires three shots in win over Habs

MacKenzie recorded three shots and a plus-1 rating through 11:37 of ice time during Monday's 2-0 win over Montreal.

The Florida captain is locked into a fourth-line role with an emphasis on killing penalties. He entered Monday's contest averaging 2:25 of shorthanded ice time per game and has now collected just three goals and 11 assists through 65 contests for the campaign. There aren't many fantasy settings where MacKenzie is a serviceable option.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Decreased ice time

MacKenzie only received 8:28 of ice time during Friday's 4-2 defeat to Calgary, a season low.

The minimal usage is certainly discouraging for the 36-year-old, who's totaled nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 38 games so far in 2017-18. Since MacKenzie also skates on the fourth line and only totaled 16 points last season, it's unlikely his point production will see much of an increase.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Snaps nine-game point drought

MacKenzie collected two assists through just 12:25 of ice time during Thursday's 6-4 win over Winnipeg.

Interestingly, the last time MacKenzie marked the scoresheet, it was also a two-assist showing. This multi-point outing has the veteran up to only six assists through 23 games for the season, and with an average of just 11:38 of ice time per contest, MacKenzie is far from a reliable fantasy asset. Don't fret ignoring him.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Taken off IR

MacKenzie (undisclosed) was activated from injured reserve Saturday, Matthew DeFranks of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Radim Vrbata (undisclosed) has taken MacKenzie's spot on IR ahead of the evening's home contest against the Blackhawks. MacKenzie will strike offensively every now and then, but he's best known for delivering a copious amount of hits each year. He's recorded four assists and 37 hits through 16 games this season.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Remains sidelined

MacKenzie (undisclosed) won't play Wednesday against Toronto, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

MacKenzie will miss a fifth consecutive game Wednesday, and the veteran forward remains without a clear timetable for his return to action. He's an important member of the Panthers' penalty-killing unit, but his limited offensive production -- four helpers in 16 games this campaign -- keeps him off the fantasy radar in nearly all season-long formats.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Placed on injured reserve

MacKenzie (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Sunday, per the official NHL.com media site.

The captain has been sidelined since he left in the first period of a Nov. 11 tilt against New Jersey, and the move will be retroactive to that date. MacKenzie has put up four points in 16 games, and his first shot at returning will be Wednsday against Toronto.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Apparent scratch Saturday

MacKenzie (undisclosed) isn't listed as active for Saturday's road game against the Kings.

The Panthers are stacked at the center position with Aleksander Barkov, Vincent Troceck and Nick Bjugstad occupying the top three spots, so there's no reason to rush MacKenzie -- a depth skater -- back into the mix. Look for Chase Balisy to continue manning the fourth line in his absence.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Remains sidelined

MacKenzie (undisclosed) isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Sharks.

MacKenzie will miss a second straight game Thursday, but his continued absence likely won't impact many fantasy owners' lineups, as the veteran forward has only notched four assists in 16 games this season. The Panthers should release an update on his status once he's given a clean bill of health.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Doubtful against Stars

MacKenzie is "very questionable" for Tuesday's matchup with Dallas, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.

MacKenzie logged just 1:54 of ice time before being forced out of Saturday's tilt against the Devils and appears set to sit out versus the Stars. Considering the center is still looking for his first goal of the year -- and has just four helpers in 16 outings -- his absence will likely be overlooked except in the deepest of formats.

  • Panthers' Derek MacKenzie: Tallies assist in blowout loss

MacKenzie picked up his second helper of the season during Thursday's 7-3 loss to Columbus.

The 36-year-old center has just two assists and no goals through the first 12 games for Florida. MacKenzie is essentially locked into his position as a bottom-six forward with virtually no time on the power play, so the scoring opportunities should remain few and far between.
