  • Taylor Chorney: Announces retirement

Chorney announced his retirement from professional hockey Thursday, Seth Rorabaugh of TribLive.com reports.

Chorney was selected by the Oilers in the second round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He spent eight seasons in the NHL split between Edmonton, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Columbus, totaling 22 points in 166 contests, before spending the final three years of his playing career in Europe.

  • Taylor Chorney: Heading to Switzerland

Chorney signed a one-year contract with Swiss club HC Lugano on Saturday.

Chorney was waived by the Capitals last February, and the Blue Jackets would use him for just one NHL game after plucking him off the wire. He amassed four goals and 18 assists over 166 NHL contests between service time with Edmonton, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Washington and Columbus. According to this latest report, the Swiss club will have the option to keep Chorney for another year at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.

  • Blue Jackets' Taylor Chorney: Used sparingly by Columbus

Chorney played just one game since he was acquired by Columbus on Feb. 22.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer, the blueliner will probably look for a new home next season. The sole game that Chorney suited up for as a Blue Jacket was the team's final regular season contest, and was a product of head coach John Tortorella resting members of his defensive corps for the postseason.

  • Blue Jackets' Taylor Chorney: Getting settled with new employer

Chorney, who was claimed off waivers from the Capitals on Wednesday, is not expected to suit up for Thursday night's road tilt against the Panthers, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic Cleveland reports.

It sounds like Chorney is still settling into his new digs, but it's good to know that the Blue Jackets likely intend to start him out at the highest level versus AHL Springfield once he's ready. At any rate, Chorney will be a depth option for Columbus and presumably waiver fodder in the fantasy arena. He's only tacked on 22 points (four goals, 18 goals) through 165 games between the Oilers, Blues, Penguins and Capitals.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Placed on waivers

The Capitals waived Chorney on Tuesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

The Capitals recently acquired Michal Kempny in a trade with the Blackhawks, so they're no longer in need of Chorney's services as a depth defenseman. If he goes unclaimed, the 30-year-old blueliner will almost certainly be assigned to AHL Hershey, where he'll likely spend the rest of the 2017-18 campaign.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Tallies assist Tuesday

Chorney recorded an assist during Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Hurricanes.

Chorney will likely garner more playing time in place of the injured Matt Niskanen (upper body). However, the 30-year-old still has very limited fantasy upside unless he can earn consistent playing time due to injuries, as he's clearly behind rookies Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey on the depth chart when everyone is healthy.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Scratched last two games

Chorney sat in the press box during Saturday's 4-3 overtime victory over Columbus.

Chorney has now been scratched the last two games in the nation's capital and has been struggling to find consistent playing time throughout 2017-18, only averaging 13:01. The 30-year-old has put up three points (one goal, two assists) in 20 games, but unless Washington encounters injuries to its defensive corps, it seems likely his usage and point production will remain similar for the rest of the season.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Pots first goal of the season Thursday

Chorney netted a goal in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

The 30-year-old defenseman opened the scoring early in the first period to give him two points in nine games to start the season. He's on track for another single-digit season, though consistent ice time may be hard to come by once Matt Niskanen (upper body) returns to the lineup, both of which significantly limit his fantasy value to the deepest of leagues.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Expected to sit out Wednesday

Chorney is expected to be a healthy scratch Wednesday against the Penguins, Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Washington reports.

Chorney's absence has more to do with giving youngster Christian Djoos playing time than anything else. He's a trusted depth defender for the Capitals, but there's a lot of competition for regular ice time on the third defense pairing, so his fantasy upside remains extremely and predictably limited.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Tallies assist Wednesday

Chorney had an assist in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Flyers.

The assist came in Chorney's first action since Jan. 31. He's been an infrequent presence in the Capitals lineup this season, but with Matt Niskanen (lower-body) on the injured list, it's likely the 29-year-old will see more consistent minutes in the short-term.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Records helper Monday

Chorney picked up an assist in Monday's 8-7 overtime loss to the Penguins.

His third point of the season certainly helped ease the absence of John Carlson (upper body). With three points in nine games, Chorney is a steady reserve defenseman for the Capitals, but he'll struggle to provide much fantasy value unless he can log regular minutes.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Draws into lineup Monday

Chorney will be in the lineup Monday against the Penguins,

With John Carlson (lower body) held out of the lineup, Chorney will make his first appearance since Jan. 3. His two points in eight games has been helpful for the Capitals, but his modest ice time and lack of opportunity in offensive situations limit his upside to deeper formats.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: First goal is game-winner Sunday

Chorney's first goal of the season held up as the game-winner Sunday against Ottawa.

Chorney managed just one goal in 55 games last season, so it's nice to see the blueliner notch his first in just his seventh game this time around. The 29-year-old isn't known for his offense, however, and doesn't play on the power play, so given his limited ice time and previous career high of six points, it's best to avoid him in most fantasy leagues

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Will play Friday

Chorney will be in the lineup Friday against the Blackhawks, Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Mid-Atlantic reports.

This will mark the 29-year-old defenseman's first time in the lineup during the 2016-17 campaign. With only eight points in 55 games last season, Chorney will have difficulty finding consistent ice time and doesn't possess much fantasy relevance at this time. He is expected to play with Brooks Orpik on the third defense pairing.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Expects to play on road trip

Chorney has been a healthy scratch in each of Washington's six game thus far, but he is expected to see his first action at some point on the team's upcoming four-game road trip, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The Capitals have wanted to give their new forwards, Zach Sanford and Brett Connolly, some experience to get familiar with the team, and unfortunately Chorney has been the most affected by the decision, despite being a defenseman. However, the 29-year-old isn't worried about how he'll perform once he's back on the ice. "No matter what, you want to play. I think that goes without saying," Chorney said. "We're all competitors who want to get out there and play. At the same time, I'm pretty confident in the way I played last season. I got to play in some big situations, and I think I held my own. I'm sure they know that, and I think they probably trust that when the time does come, I'll be able to do my job." Last season, Chorney recorded 56 hits and 58 blocked shots in 55 games, while adding six points (one goal, five assists).

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Will play Wednesday

Chorney will be in the lineup Wednesday for Game 4 in Philadelphia, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.

The 28-year-old is being called upon to help fill the void left by Brooks Orpik (upper body) who will miss at least one game after being knocked out in the second period of Game 3. Chorney has a handful of playoff games under his belt, and is projected to slide in on the third pairing with Dmitry Orlov.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Signs two-year extension

Chorney signed a two-year, one-way contract extension that carries a cap hit of $800,000 per season Friday, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The extension is just the second one-way deal that the 28-year-old Chorney has signed during his career. While Brooks Orpik and John Carlson were sidelined with lower-body injuries this season, Chorney stepped in to the lineup and excelled in his role as a sixth defenseman. For all the reliability that Chorney provides Washington's back end with, he won't provide much offensively, having tallied five points (all assists) in 45 games this season.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Will play Thursday

Chorney (illness) is on the ice for warmups and will return to the lineup Thursday against the Islanders, Mike Vogel of the Capitals' official site reports.

Chorney was considered questionable heading into the contest, but his presence on the ice for warmups indicates he'll be able to give it a go. Barring an odd setback of some kind, there's no reason to believe he shouldn't be good to go moving forward. The blueliner was paired with Dmitry Orlov during line rushes, and will likely serve in the same role for the contest.

  • Capitals' Taylor Chorney: Battle with flu continues

Chorney continues to suffer from flu-like symptoms and is considered "questionable" for Thursday's matchup against the Islanders, Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post reports.

Chorney had to exit Tueseday's contest early due to the illness, and it appears the defenseman isn't 100 percent quite yet. As a precaution in case Chorney is unable to go, the Capitals have recalled Aaron Ness from AHL Hershey.
