Jeff Zatkoff: Hangs up skates
Zatkoff announced his retirement from professional hockey Thursday, Seth Rorabaugh of TribLive.com reports.
Zatkoff spent the past two seasons playing in the DEL with the Straubing Tigers, for which he posted a 46-26-0 record. Over the course of his NHL career, the netminder logged 48 games for Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

Jeff Zatkoff: Looking to return to North America
Zatkoff terminated his contract with DEL team Straubing in order to sign an NHL or AHL deal, Seth Rorabaugh of TribLive.com reports.
Zatkoff hasn't appeared in an NHL game since 2016-17 when he was with the Kings, in which he logged 13 games and posted a 2-7-1 record and .879 save percentage. Even if the netminder snags an NHL contract, it will likely be a two-way deal and he figures to spend some time in the minors.

Jeff Zatkoff: Joining German club
Zatkoff penned a one-year contract with the Straubing Tigers of the DEL on Friday.
Zatkoff's only action of the 2017-18 campaign was in the minors with AHL Cleveland. The netminder posted a 4-9-0 record with an .885 save percentage in 17 outings. Since lifting Lord Stanley's Cup in 2016 with the Penguins, Zatkoff has struggled to find a permanent backup role and instead will given European hockey a try.

Blue Jackets' Jeff Zatkoff: Unable to lace up for NHL contest in 2017-18
Zatkoff didn't appear in a NHL game but did play in 17 games for AHL Cleveland, notching a 3.22 GAA and .885 save percentage in 2017-18.
Despite playing for more than 10 games in both Pittsburgh during 2015-16 and Los Angeles in 2016-17, there just wasn't room in Columbus for Zatkoff to draw a start with Sergei Bobrovsky and Joonas Korpisalo anchored in from of him on the depth chart. After bouncing around from the minors to majors during the regular season, the 30-year-old did serve as the third goaltender during the playoffs, but again didn't see any action. Zatkoff is set to enter free agency, and with minimal usage in Columbus, it wouldn't be surprising to see him wearing different colors come training camp.

Blue Jackets' Jeff Zatkoff: Recalled Tuesday
Zatkoff was recalled from AHL Cleveland on Tuesday, Alison Lukan of The Athletic reports.
With Sergei Bobrovsky out due to illness, Zatkoff got the emergency recall and will back up Joonas Korpisalo in a home game against the Golden Knights. The 30-year-old has a dreadful 3.56 GAA and .863 save percentage in seven games for Cleveland this season, but given Korpisalo's own poor recent form, it's not out of the question for Zatkoff to see game action Tuesday if Korpisalo gets blitzed by Vegas.

Zatkoff, who hasn't appeared in an NHL game since the 2016-17 campaign with the Kings, will once again trade places on the organizational depth chart with Joonas Korpisalo after he guided the AHL's Monsters to a 5-3 win over Stockton on Friday.

Zatkoff trades places with Joonas Korpisalo, who is the implied No. 2 option in Columbus, despite how the Blue Jackets chronically shuffle their depth goalies between the organization's ranks to maximize playing time. Fantasy owners shouldn't concern themselves with Zatkoff, as he hasn't appeared in an NHL game this season, and both his fantasy and real-life prospects took a major hit last year when he was thoroughly outplayed by Peter Budaj in Los Angeles.

The Blue Jackets recalled Zatkoff from AHL Cleveland on Wednesday.
Columbus sent netminder Joonas Korpisalo to the minors in a corresponding move, so Zatkoff will take over as Sergei Bobrovsky's backup for the foreseeable future. The 30-year-old American has posted a 1-2-0 record while registering an ugly 3.33 GAA and .874 save percentage in four appearances with AHL Cleveland this campaign.

Zatkoff's promotion was nothing more than a paper transaction to meet the NHL two-goalie requirement. The Blue Jackets wanted to get Joonas Korpisalo some ice time in the minors during the All-Star break. With the club back in action against Minnesota on Tuesday, it flipped the two netminders back -- which is likely how it will stay for the remainder of the season.

Zatkoff was recalled from AHL Cleveland on Friday, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic Cleveland reports.
This move was solely to fill the league's two-goalie roster requirement, since backup Joonas Korpisalo was sent to minors for the All-Star break in order to continue getting game action. Zatkoff has played just two games in the AHL this season, allowing four goals on 48 shots for one win. He's expected back in the minor league following the break.

The 30-year-old was immediately re-assigned to AHL Cleveland following the deal, where he'll likely spend the majority of the 2017-18 season. After seeing some ice time last season while Jonathon Quick was sidelined, Zatkoff has yet to participate in a game in the NHL this year, and will likely be an insurance policy in Columbus should one of its goaltenders suffer an injury.

Zatkoff was waived by the Kings on Tuesday, James Mirtle of The Athletic Toronto reports.
Given a golden opportunity to step in for Jonathan Quick after he sustained a significant groin injury in last season's regular-season opener, Zatkoff had trouble staying healthy himself and ended up relinquishing his role to Peter Budaj, who ended up getting traded to the Lightning at the deadline. Zatkoff's NHL numbers from 2016-17 included a 2-7-1 record, 2.94 GAA and .879 save percentage, and he also struggled over eight games in the AHL. He'll presumably join the Kings' AHL affiliate in the likely event that he clears waivers.

Kings' Jeff Zatkoff: To remain with team after clearing waivers
Zatkoff is expected to remain with the Kings after clearing waivers Wednesday, LA Kings Insider reports.
There was some talk of the Kings recalling Jack Campbell to serve as Peter Budaj's backup as they await the return of Jonathan Quick but Zatkoff will remain with the Kings for now. His days are numbered with Quick expected back in early-to-mid March however and won't carry any fantasy value with Budaj firmly entrenched as the team's starting netminder.

Zatkoff was waived by Los Angeles on Wednesday, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
The Kings are taking the first step toward making room on the 23-man roster for Jonathan Quick (groin) by placing Zatkoff on waivers. If the 29-year-old clears, Los Angeles will then be able to move him down to the AHL once Quick is given the all-clear. A career backup, the Detroit native may not garner a lot of interest from other teams, as he owns a 2-7-1 record with a 2.95 GAA.

The 29-year-old has started just one game over the last month and appeared in just two others in mop-up duty, so he doesn't really get enough opportunities to be fantasy relevant. Zatkoff is 2-7-1 with a 3.24 GAA and .830 save percentage in 13 appearances.

Zatkoff gave up three goals in the first period, and never really had a chance despite his team's 34-22 advantage in shots. This performance was par for the course in a season that has seen the former Penguin go 2-5-1 with a 2.84 GAA and .892 save percentage.
