Antti Niemi: Headed overseas
Niemi will join Helsinki Jokerit (KHL) for the 2019-20 campaign, Juha Luotola of Satakunnan Kansa reports.
Niemi saw action in 17 games with the Habs this year, in which he posted an 8-6-2 record, 3.78 GAA and .887 save percentage. The netminder played for three different teams in 2017-18 and appeared to have found a home in Montreal, but a poor campaign saw him get his walking order immediately following season's end.

Antti Niemi: Won't be re-signed by Montreal
The Canadiens aren't interested in re-signing Niemi this offseason.
Niemi struggled in limited action this campaign, compiling an 8-6-2 record while posting a sub-par 3.78 GAA and .887 save percentage in 17 appearances, so it's not exactly surprising to see that Montreal isn't interested in bringing him back to backup Carey Price again in 2019-20. The 35-year-old journeyman will hope to land a backup gig with a different NHL club this offseason, but if he doesn't garner any interest, he may decide to head overseas to continue his career.

Canadiens' Antti Niemi: Rough night against former team
Niemi surrendered four goals on 24 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Sharks on Thursday.
Making a rare appearance in place of the oft-used Carey Price, Niemi didn't have what it takes to stop the NHL's third-best offense. Niemi's record falls to 8-6-2 with a 3.78 GAA and an .887 save percentage. Expect Price to start Friday's contest in Anaheim.

Niemi will start in the cage Thursday versus the Sharks in San Jose.
Niemi last made an appearance in the crease Feb. 7 versus the Panthers, when he let in three goals on nine shots. The Canadiens remain in the thick of the playoff hunt, so his opportunities should be sparse down the stretch, but he'll get one Thursday versus a Sharks club notching 3.71 goals per game at home this season.

The 35-year-old has not seen the ice since Feb. 2, and has a 3.61 GAA and .893 save percentage this campaign. Niemi could be busy, facing a Panthers team that averages 33.3 shots per game.

Niemi was replaced by Carey Price after allowing three goals on nine shots in Sunday's 6-3 loss to Florida.
Because Montreal tied the game at three in the second period, Niemi's record will not be affected by Sunday's loss and will remain at 8-5-2. On Sunday, the Finn played just 13:57 before he was replaced by Carey Price, who made 24 saves and allowed a pair of goals in the road defeat.

Niemi lines up between the pipes because No. 1 goalie Carey Price is serving a one-game suspension for declining an invitation to participate in the All-Star Game. Montreal is expected to call up Michael McNiven from AHL Laval to serve as Niemi's backup.

Niemi made 52 saves in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Panthers.
The above is not a typo, as Niemi was absolutely brilliant in Tuesday's game, allowing a single goal on 53 shots. His performance included 21 saves in the third period. The 52-save showing set a new franchise record for most in a home game. Niemi's season record improves to 8-4-1 with a 3.63 GAA and .897 save percentage. He figures to start one of Montreal's next two games, with the Habs set to play back-to-back contests Friday and Saturday.

Niemi will be the home starter versus the Panthers on Tuesday, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports.
Niemi reportedly will be countered by 39-year-old netminder Roberto Luongo in this divisional game against a Panthers club that ranks 11th in the league in scoring at 3.09 goals per game. Carey Price was in goal for an overtime win over the Bruins on Monday, so that's the main reason why coach Claude Julien will ice the backup this time around.

An encouraging performance from Niemi gives the Finnish netminder three wins in his last four starts. Niemi amassed 45 saves in Monday's 3-2 overtime road win over the Stars.
Coming into this game, 38 saves were the most Niemi had seen this season. He was absolutely brilliant in the comeback win and even worked around a Jamie Benn power-play goal for Dallas' second tally in about a seven-minute span. Niemi has plenty of experience operating as a No. 1 goalie, but he'll relinquish the prime role as soon as Carey Price is ready to return from his lower-body injury.

Niemi will complete the back-to-back set after getting the best of the Panthers with a 23-save outing in Sunrise, Florida on Friday. Montreal evidently would rather take the chance on a potentially weary Niemi than ice 21-year-old Michael McNiven for his NHL debut, which makes a lot of sense considering the next opponent is a Lightning squad with the league's best offense at 4.13 goals per game.
